Christian Accommodative Mindfulness
More clinicians are using mindfulness-based therapeutic strategies; however, Evangelical Christian clients sometimes worry about the Buddhist origins of these treatments. Christian accommodative mindfulness (CAM) attempts to address these concerns with culturally sensitive adaptations to mindfulness methods. We present a definition of CAM and propose some worldview adjustments to typical mindfulness constructs when working with these clients. The…
The Mekong Exploration Commission, 1866-68
The political map of mainland South East Asia seems unnecessarily complex with more miles of international frontier than any other region of comparable size except Europe (where frontiers now count for less) and West Africa. Nor do the attenuated configurations of Burma (Myanmar), Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia owe much to physical geography. Their borders are the product of political advantage as perceived in the context of AngloFrench riv…

Last Post
In the East, as recently as 1930, half the world's population was subjected to Dutch, British, French or American colonial rule. Two generations later the West's empires in the East are extinct. Instead, the Orient has become the Pacific miracle, a catch phrase for all things modern and dynamic. In this survey, John Keay draws on the writing and reminiscences of contemporaries, both rulers and ruled, to chart the extinction of empire. From the 19…
The Honourable Company
During 200 years East India Company grew from a loose association of Elizabethan tradesmen into the grandest society of merchants in universe. As a commercial enterprise it came to control half world's trade and as a political entity it administered an embryonic empire. Without it there would have been no British India and no British Empire. In a tapestry ranging from Southern Africa to north-west America, and from reign of Elizabeth I to that of…

The Gilgit Game
The exploration and appropriation of the wilderness in the heart of the Western Himalayas has become known as the Gilgit Game in recognition of its importance as a crucial episode in the Great Game--the century-long rivalry between Russia and British India for control of Central Asia. Indeed, authors from Kipling to Masters have treated this struggle as the epitome of this competition between nations. But as John Keay shows in this fascinating an…
Academic explorer and enigma
Sir Aurel Stein: Archaeological Explorer. By Jeannette Mirsky. Chicago and London, Chicago University Press, 1977. Pp. 547. Maps. Illus. Bibliog. Notes. Index. $17.50
When Men and Mountains Meet
The majestic and sublime Himalayas have long exerted a powerful force on the imaginations of explorers and travelers. Indeed, as a challenge for these adventurous souls, the mountain wilderness that separates the Indian subcontinent from Inner Asia is unique: no similar region has ever aroused such intense interest. When Men and Mountains Meet, a book based largely on out-of-print and archival material, is the first narrative account of the early…
