  • The Sangha River Interval, Its Earliest Village Settlements, and the Bantu-Speakers’ Expansion During the Late Holocene (Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo Republic)

  • Late Holocene forest contraction and fragmentation in central Africa

Open Access•Jean Maley, Charles Doumenge et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

During the warmer Holocene Period, two major climatic crises affected the Central African rainforests. The first crisis, around 4000 cal yr BP, caused the contraction of the forest in favor of savanna expansion at its northern and southern periphery. The second crisis, around 2500 cal yr BP, resulted in major perturbation at the forest core, leading to forest disturbance and fragmentation with a rapid expansion of pioneer-type vegetation, and a m…

  • Middle to Late Holocene Paleoclimatic Change and the Early Bantu Expansion in the Rain Forests of Western Central Africa

Koen Bostoen, Bernard Clist et al.•ARTICLE•Current Anthropology•2015•Cited by: 51•References: 98

This article reviews evidence from biogeography, palynology, geology, historical linguistics, and archaeology and presents a new synthesis of the paleoclimatic context in which the early Bantu expansion took place. Paleoenvironmental data indicate that a climate crisis affected the Central African forest block during the Holocene, first on its periphery around 4000 BP and later at its core around 2500 BP.We argue here that both phases had an impa…

  • Peuples et évolution climatique en Afrique nord-tropicale, de la fin du Néolithique à l’aube de l’époque moderne

    Open Access•Jean Maley, Robert Vernet•ARTICLE•Afriques•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 27

  • Seasonality change and the third millennium BP rainforest crisis in southern Cameroon (Central Africa)

Open Access•Alfred Ngomanda, Katharina Neumann et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2009

The third millennium BP crisis of the central African rainforest is not sufficiently understood. The low resolution of most pollen profiles and a large plateau of the calibration curve aggravate the exact dating of the event, and its causal climatic parameters are debated. We present a high-resolution pollen profile from the swamp site Nyabessan in the southern Cameroonian rainforest, covering the period 3100-2300 cal yr BP. Between 3100 and 2500…

  • Lowland rainforest response to hydrological changes during the last 1500 years in Gabon, Western Equatorial Africa

Open Access•Alfred Ngomanda, Dominique Jolly et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

Pollen and δ 13 C TOM data obtained from two contrasting lake sequences (Lakes Kamalété and Nguène), located 200 km apart in the lowland rainforest of Gabon, provide complementary local and regional 1500-yr records of high resolution (15–30 yr) vegetation change. A combination of aquatic, semi-aquatic and terrestrial pollen showed in both records that the tropical rainforest increased during periods of high rainfall and decreased during drought i…

  • Vegetation changes during the past 1300 years in western equatorial Afnrca

    Open Access•Alfred Ngomanda, Alex Chepstow-Lusty et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2005•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Vegetation changes during the past 1300 years are reconstructed in western equatorial Africa using a high-resolution pollen record from Lake Kamalete This small marshy basin (c. 5-7 ha) is located in forest-savanna mosaic in Lope Reserve (043'S, 116'E), central Gabon. The Kamalete pollen data show the persistence over the past 1300 years of a relatively stable forest-savanna mosaic, associated with significant changes of the forest component. Thr…

  • Dust, Clouds, Rain Types, and Climatic Variations in Tropical North Africa

    Open Access•Jean Maley•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1982

Dust and processes of raindrop formation in the clouds play a very important role in the climatic evolution of tropical north Africa. Sedimentologic, stratigraphic, pedologic, geomorphologic, and palynologic data converge to show that a major environmental change occurred in tropical Africa about 7000 yr B.P. In the Sudanian and Sudano–Guinean zones (wet tropical zone), from 15,000 to 7000 yr B.P., rivers deposited mostly clay, while from 7000 to…
