An IR Textbook in the Interwar Period: Reflections on the Contents of a Quincy Wright “Time Capsule
A recently opened “time capsule” from the 1930’s reveals how the marketing of a prominent textbook on International Relations (IR) was done then and how one opinion-leading scholar responded to that textbook’s marketing, but especially, to its overall approach. The textbook was Simonds and Emeny’s The Great Powers in World Politics (1935), putatively the “most widely sold book in its field.” The scholar was Quincy Wright, one of IR’s founders and…
Custom, Reconsidered: Lessons on Unwritten Rules from Professional Sports
Professional sports have unwritten, but nevertheless well-appreciated and behavior-guiding rules that have come to be viewed as obligatory and subject to enforcement. This essay uses such unwritten rules from professional sports as novel lenses through which to view afresh, and more richly to appreciate, customary international law (CIL) rules’ nature, origins, and evolution. Though much CIL scholarship has presumed that merely tradition and self…

A study of sustainable assessment theory in higher education tutorials
A study of sustainable assessment theory in nine tutorial courses at four colleges demonstrated that three long-term learning outcomes improved: Independence, Intellectual Maturity and Creativity. Eight of 10 traits associated with these outcomes were validated through internal reliability, faculty and student rubrics, and faculty case studies reporting pedagogic innovations and improvements of student abilities in self-assessment. The findings s…
The Grenada Invasion, International Law and the Scoon Invitation: A 30-year Retrospective
All the international legal rationales for the US-OECS (Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States) invasion of Grenada in October 1983 arguably depend, at least in part, on the nature, substance and circumstances of the request for external assistance that was made by Grenadian Governor-General Sir Paul Scoon. Of all the factual circumstances surrounding the Grenada episode, perhaps the least well known in the 1980s were those related to the so-ca…
Teaching International Law as a Partially Online Course: The Hybrid/Blended Approach to Pedagogy
This article recounts the author’s experience of teaching International Law as a ‘‘blended’ ’ or ‘‘hybrid’ ’ course. In hybrid teaching, a signifi-cant portion of the learning activities is moved online, and time tradi-tionally spent in the classroom is reduced but not eliminated. The article first briefly reviews the literature on international law pedagogy. Next, it describes the particular context within which the author rede-signed the author…

A Study of War and An Agenda for Peace: Reflections on the contemporary relevance of Quincy Wright's plan for a ‘New International Order’
By all accounts Quincy Wright was a ‘great man’. He has been called the ‘founding father’ of the academic field of International Relations, a ‘teacher par excellence, ’ and a ’painstaking and indefatigable scholar’. Wright's students and colleagues have extolled him as ‘exceptionally learned’, the ‘father of “peace research”’, and the ‘prophet of a new world order’. Such praise is scarcely hyperbolic. Indeed, during his eighty years (1890–1970), …

The dialogic socialization of aggression in a family's court of reason and inquiry
In a family's “court of reason and inquiry,” a quasi‐legal institution emerging periodically in ordinary family conversation, moral judgments about individuals and their relationships are heard and discussed. This is an interpretive study of one family's court discourse concerning aggression between two brothers (9 years, 9 months and 11 years, 11 months). It is conducted through an analysis of 10 parental strategies, representing all the turns w…
