Teacher Internship and the Culture of Teaching in Japan
Japan's teacher internship was a hotly debated political issue for three decades until the legislature finally approved its implementation in 1988. The aim of this paper is to explore how the culture of teaching mediated the implementation of the government‐sponsored teacher internship. The data presented in this paper come from ethnographic research conducted in 1989 with a focus on three elementary public schools in Tokyo. Our findings suggest …

Theodore Brameld's culturological vision
Theodore Brameld was a visionary philosopher of education and a prophetic reconstructionist. He devoted his career to reconceptualizing education so it could serve as an agent in building a democratic social order. He saw education as grounded in culture; its study required a partnership among anthropology, philosophy, and education, from which he defined philosophy as an effort of culture to become conscious of itself and undertake sustained exp…

Toward the Equality of a Japanese Minority
For those dedicated to comparative education, the glittering lodes of cross-societal studies promise nuggets but too often yield only fool's gold. We who mine these veins seek to learn what policies other societies establish to deal with the problems of their minorities, how schooling figures in those policies, and whether they successfully promote the social mobility of the minorities. We hear few 'eurekas'. Tenacity epitomizes minority problems…
Polarized Socialization in an Urban High School
Based on ethnographic research, this article analyzes the pattern of polarized socialization at an urban high school. It concentrates on aspects of adolescent experience: the status-stratified residential structure of the community, interaction patterns in the school, peer groups, the sectioning system adopted by the school, and the students' differential access to pedagogical content. Segregated interaction was typical in these dimensions of day…

Enculturation-A Reconsideration
The concept of enculturation has not been given its articulate definition. Therefore, it has been used inconsistently in anthropology as well as in other fields. Various anthropologists have tended to regard enculturation as consisting of such processes as socialization, the acquiring of culture, and cultural internalization, excluding an innovative process of enculturation. Herskovits' definition, however, is more elaborate, and, furthermore, in…
