An Incorporate Fellowship? Antiphon, Thucydides, Beccaria, and Elizabeth Petrovna on the Death Penalty
Drawing on an unexplored archive of texts related to theories of punishment, ranging from Antiphon to Nietzsche, the article makes a case for rethinking transmission and propagation of ideas as a distinct mode of transhistorical community building. Incorporate fellowships cannot be conceived of either as sections of an amorphous intertext, à la Kristeva, or as traditions handed down within authoritative canons. They may include agents that are ps…
Feeding Upon the Double-Headed Eagle
Mikhail Kheraskov's (1733-1807) reputation has suffered a singular reversal-perhaps the most extreme and unfortunate peripety in Russian literary history. Toward the end of his life, Kheraskov's place at the very center of the national canon, in the minds of authors like Nikolai Karamzin and Andrei Turgenev, was beyond dispute. Today not even scholars of eighteenth-century Russian literature have a deep familiarity with his works; the Rossiad, Kh…
Aesthetic Republicanism in Shostakovich’s Fourteenth Symphony
Dmitri Shostakovich’s Fourteenth symphony, marked by an experimental and politically charged libretto, is set to verses by four poets, including a piece by Wilhelm Küchelbecker that the composer discovered in Yuri Tynianov’s historical novel Kiukhlia: Story of a Decembrist . Considered in light of the manifold intellectual ties between Shostakovich and Tynianov, the use of Küchelbecker’s poem can be seen to have major implications for the idea of…
Republican Liberty and the Pindaric Genealogy of Modern Abstractions
Pindaric odes written around the time of the French Revolution have a penchant for abstractions. Apostrophized Liberty, Fortune, Virtue, and Joy, which replaced the monarch as the ode's addressee, attest to the numinous prehistory of distinctively modern concepts that Reinhart Koselleck termed "collective singulars." In particular, eighteenth-century Pindarics put forward representations of Liberty prevailing over an unenlightened past, which con…
How to Murder a Work of Art
Historical Poetics, while in many ways an ally of Russian Formalism, finds itself in an uneasy relationship with the empiricist mode of formalist enquiry inasmuch as the latter is seen as generally inimical to historical contextualization. On the other hand, representatives of both Historical Poetics and the morphological method have at different points been accused of favoring atomizing analysis over aesthetic appreciation. This putative inabili…
The Genealogy of the Muses
This article puts forward a novel approach to the history of poetic forms in Archaic Greece. By investigating the evolution of the “diegetic frames” involving the figure of the Muse(s), it seeks to trace mutual influences between different genres (Homeric epic, catalogue poetry, the Homeric Hymns, early choral lyric) and, in the case of the Iliad and Hesiod’s Theogony, to identify distinct strata in the composition of one text. This genealogical …
