Development and Preliminary Validation of the Interest in Leadership Scale
Interest pertains to an individual's psychological arousal toward a topic, which is thought to motivate effort allocation and attention. Interest in leadership has been identified as a potential antecedent of leader development; however, supporting empirical evidence has been hindered by the lack of a relevant scale to measure the construct. Study 1 outlines the development of the Interest in Leadership Scale (ILS) using Rasch scale development p…
Leadership in applied psychology
leadership research was rare and focused primarily on traits differentiating leaders from nonleaders, subsequent to World War II the research area developed in 3 major waves of conceptual, empirical, and methodological advances: (a) behavioral and attitude research; (b) behavioral, social-cognitive, and contingency research; and (c) transformational, social exchange, team, and gender-related research. Our review of this work shows dramatic increa…
Leadership Development
Contemporary organizations face critical challenges associated with possessing and leveraging leadership capabilities. Researchers studying leadership development have responded to this practical imperative, although research on the topic is still in the early stages of scientific development. In assessing the state of the science in leadership development, we review an array of theoretical and research approaches with the goal of stimulating tho…

Servant Leadership
Servant leadership was first introduced in 1970, but was slow to attract the attention of academic researchers until recently. Today research on servant leadership is being conducted at an accelerated pace. Psychometrically sound measures are available, and servant leadership has passed the test of showing incremental validity after controlling for the two most widely studied approaches to leadership, leader-member exchange, and transformational …

Self‐Monitoring at Work
It is argued that the recent study of personality in industrial and organizational (I‐O) psychology is characterized by two limitations: (a) almost complete reliance on the Big Five to the exclusion of other personality variables (most notably, self‐monitoring) and (b) insufficient theoretical attention paid to the criteria in work‐related personality research. In an attempt to overcome both of these limitations, we review theoretical and empiric…
Healthcare Reform and the Workplace Experience of Nurses
The introduction of market-based reforms over the past twenty-five years has fundamentally changed the way healthcare is delivered in the United States. This paper reports the results of a survey of the workplace experiences and attitudes of hospital-based registered nurses under healthcare reform. The authors find that nurses who had experienced reform-related job restructuring held substantially more negative views of the climate for patient ca…
Meta-Analytic review of leader–member exchange theory
The leader-member exchange (LMX) literature is reviewed using meta-analysis. Relationships between LMX and its correlates are examined, as are issues related to the LMX construct, including measurement and leader-member agreement. Results suggest significant relationships between LMX and job performance, satisfaction with supervision, overall satisfaction, commitment, role conflict, role clarity, member competence, and turnover intentions. The re…
Correcting for Measurement Error Attenuation in Structural Equation Models
The increasing popularity of structural equation models that correct for attenuation due to measurement error is noted. The methods by which structural models correct for the effects of measurement error are reviewed. Next, implications of such disattenuation for interpreting the results of structural equation models are considered. Recommendations are advanced for addressing the practice of disattenuation, and caution is urged in drawing inferen…
Development of a Short form for the Raven Advanced Progressive Matrices Test
The Raven Advanced Progressive Matrices Test (APM) is a popular measure of higher order general cognitive ability (g). Its use in both basic research and applied settings is partially attributable to its apparent low level of culture loading. However, a major drawback curtailing more widespread use is its length; the APM is a 36-item power test with an administration time of 40-60 minutes. The present study reports on the development of a 12-item…
