  • Urban Heat Island intensity and buildings’ energy needs in Duran, Ecuador: Simulation studies and proposal of mitigation strategies

Open Access•Jaqueline Litardo, Massimo Palme et al.•ARTICLE•Sustainable Cities and Society•2020

Urban Heat Island (UHI) is a phenomenon that is affecting cities across the world. In tropical climates, an increased UHI intensity can cause a significant rise in heat stress probability, both indoors and outdoors. A general increase in the air-conditioning energy consumption of buildings should also be expected as a consequence. This paper evaluates the case of Duran, Ecuador. It estimated, through a spatial distribution analysis, urban morphol…

  • Homenaje a Crescencio Ruiz Chiapetto

  • The Tragedy of Terrorism: Perspective, Reflection, and Action in the Aftermath

    Open Access•José Macias•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•2002•Cited by: 4

Public reactions to the terrorist acts of September 11 included a range of responses from shock, fear, and anger, to group profiling, acts of violent retribution, and dichotomous "us" and "them" thinking. The cycle of terrorism requires perspective and reflection so that educational anthropologists can act in ways that lead to more useful understandings of the phenomenon and tragedy of terrorism within society-at-large

  • Resurgence of Ethnic Nationalism in California and Germany: The Impact on Recent Progress in Education

    Open Access•José Macias•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•1996•Cited by: 4•References: 16

In a comparative study, the author examines the recent passage of California's "anti-illegal immigrant" Proposition 187, and the resurgence of hostility toward resident "foreigners" in Germany, as forms of ethnic nationalism resulting in exclusionary movements directed toward Mexicans, and Turkish and other non-German groups, respectively. Historical analysis and data from educational ethnographic studies reveal the interrelationship of historica…

  • Forgotten History: Educational and Social Antecedents of High Achievement among Asian Immigrants in the United States

    José Macias•ARTICLE•Curriculum Inquiry•1993•Cited by: 5•References: 13

Recent studies of ethnic minority group education in the United States include comparative analyses between the growing cohort of Asian-Americans and the ethnic minorities of longer standing. The educational record of Asian-Americans, especially that of recent immigrants, tends to be markedly superior to the patterns of poor school adjustment, low achievement, and high dropout rates among American Indians, blacks, and Hispanics. A current view in…

  • Informal Education. Sociocultural Expression. and Symbolic Meaning in Popular Immigration Music Text

    José Macias•ARTICLE•Ethnic studies review•1991

One February morning as I noted the events of the primary school talent show, a sixth-grade boy belted out this song made popular in two countries by the Mexican rock group, Los Bukis. It was 1987, and I was doing fieldwork in a rural Mexican immigrant-sending community I call San Felipe, for an ethnography of families and their children who emigrated from Mexico to the United States[2

  • Scholastic Antecedents of Immigrant Students: Schooling in a Mexican Immigrant-Sending Community

    Open Access•José Macias•ARTICLE•Anthropology & Education Quarterly•1990•Cited by: 6•References: 29

Existing shortcomings in the immigrant education literature include a neglect of the formal dimensions of schooling, preimmigration education, and Mexican students. An ethnographic case study based on a cultural-ecological conceptual framework was designed to examine these issues from a transnational perspective. This article presents findings from the project's initial phase-a study of primary (grades 1-6) schooling in an immigrant-sending commu…
