  • So what is new about leadership-as-practice

    Open Access•Margaret E Collinson•ARTICLE•Leadership•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 4

This paper returns to the original focus of my earlier 'Leading Questions' article (Collinson, 2017) which questioned Joe Raelin’s (excessive) claims that LAP is a distinct ‘movement’, particularly new and supercedes post-heroic perspectives and is more critical than critical leadership studies. Arguing that Raelin's claims overstate the value of LAP, this rejoinder draws on Giddens’ structuration theory to illustrate my points about structure, p…

  • What’s new about Leadership-as-Practice

    Open Access•Margaret E Collinson•ARTICLE•Leadership•2017•Cited by: 2•References: 5

It appears that leadership studies is now in the throes of a ‘new movement’, one that, according to its leading exponent, is ‘destined to shake the foundations of the very meaning of leadership in the worlds of both theory and practice’ (Raelin, 2016b : 1). This ‘leading questions’ article questions three of Raelin’s central claims for this Leadership-as-Practice perspective namely that this approach supersedes other post-heroic perspectives, con…

  • Blended Leadership

    Open Access•David Collinson, Margaret E Collinson•ARTICLE•Leadership•2009•Cited by: 8•References: 7

This article explores employee perspectives on effective leadership in UK Further Education (FE). Studies on leadership effectiveness typically seek either to specify the individual qualities of `heroic' leaders or, increasingly, to highlight the collective nature of `post-heroic' leadership. While these discourses are frequently seen as dichotomous and competing, our research found that FE employees often value practices that combine elements of…

  • How the Romans got themselves into hot water

    Laura C Mcparland, Zoë Hazell et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Archaeology•2009•Cited by: 2•References: 3

The remains of hypocausts are noted as being widespread throughout the Roman Empire but, whereas the structure of hypocaust systems has been widely documented, primary knowledge of operating temperatures is limited. The petrographic technique of reflectance microscopy is used here to quantify cell wall reflectance values for charcoals from the hypocaust furnace of a bath suite forming part of small Romano-British villa complex at Groundwell Ridge…

  • The use of reflectance values for the interpretation of natural and anthropogenic charcoal assemblages

    Open Access•Laura C Mcparland, Margaret E Collinson et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeological and Anthropological…•2009•Cited by: 14•References: 27

Charcoal assemblages occur in both natural and archaeological settings. Cell wall reflectance values of charcoal in polished blocks under oil provide a proxy for temperature of formation. This paper aims to (1) determine whether wildfire charcoals and anthropological charcoals from various pyrotechnical activities can be distinguished using reflectance data and (2) establish if re-charring (i.e. use of charcoal fuel) can be recognised in the arch…

  • Empowerment and Managerial Labor Strategies

    Open Access•Paul Edwards, Margaret E Collinson et al.•ARTICLE•Work and Occupations•2002•Cited by: 8•References: 44

Hopes that senior managers attach to programs of empowerment are often dashed in practice. Yet, little research has been conducted into whether lower level managers embrace the language of empowerment, and if not, how they view efforts to develop employee commitment. Case study research in six named organizations in the United Kingdom reveals that managers did not use the term empowerment and that they distinguished its claims to give substantial…

  • Delayering Managers

Open Access•David L Collinson, David Collinson et al.•ARTICLE•Organization•1997

This article seeks to extend the growing interest in time-space issues within social and organizational theory (Giddens, 1984, 1987; Harvey, 1990) by focusing on management and gender in the workplace. It examines the impact of what we have termed `time-space surveillance' on managers who have survived delayering and also addresses the gendered conditions and consequences of these processes. Drawing on research from the UK insurance industry, we …

  • Gendering Organisations

    Open Access•Margaret E Collinson, Margaret Collinson•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•1996•References: 2

Over the past fifteen years, there have been significant developments in the analysis of gender and organisations. The following review examines three recently pub lished texts that represent very different genres as well as possible future paths for research. Given their considerable diversity, this review does not present a comparative analysis. All the books contribute to our understanding of various aspects of gender and organisations, albeit…

  • It's Only Dick

    Open Access•Margaret E Collinson, Margaret Collinson et al.•ARTICLE•Work Employment and Society•1996•Cited by: 78•References: 21

Most studies of sexual harassment in organizations have used quantitative methods to measure the incidence of cases. Less attention has focused upon the qualitative dynamics of workplace sexual harassment. Drawing upon detailed qualitative and quantitative data, this paper explores the complex organisational interactions and interrelationships through which the vicious circles of sexual harassment can be reproduced. Highlighting women managers' e…

  • Mismanaging Sexual Harassment

Open Access•David L Collinson, David Collinson et al.•ARTICLE•Women in Management Review•1992

The EC has recently ratified a code of practice on sexual harassment in the workplace. Drawing on case study material, argues that initiatives designed to formalize the procedures for dealing with sexual harassment are necessary but by no means sufficient for its effective management. Presents case studies which outline how sexual harassment can be mismanaged both by professional managers and by trade union representatives
