Language ideologies in Barbados: Processes and paradigms
Barbadian ways of speaking draw their stylistic richness from intertwined and differentially valued resources of Creole (Bajan) and Barbadian English. Barbadians (and linguists) interpret this formal diversity through two ideological paradigms. One (labeled in Bajan, “adjusting to suit”) corresponds to linguist’s “register”. By attending to laminations of individual repertoires and to skills of their selective contextual deployment, the paradigm …
From apartheid to incorporation: The emergence and transformations of modern language community in Barbados, West Indies
This article explores the insights that research on the emergence of ideologies of modernity and recent discussions of commensurability can offer for the understanding of the construction and maintenance of sociolinguistic hierarchies in Barbados. It takes as its focus (1) the ways in which the drawing of the boundaries of language communities has been linked to broader ideological and political economic processes that surround and depend on ling…
Citationality
Citationality connects semiotic events interdiscursively by embedding a semiotic form derived from one event within another. Citationality is never only about an iteration of the semiotic form itself. It carries its prior contexts, actors, and performances across the events, conjuring claims and realms of relations, identities, and social frameworks as emergent in the new event. Citationality is important because it is performative. The approach …
Scaling Language Boundaries: Inclusion, Commensurability, and a Caribbean Coloniality
Drawing on ethnography as well as media and archival sources, this article approaches issues of language and relations of power in Barbados along ideological axes of civilization, modernity, and intelligence. Its particular focus is on the ideologies of social and language boundaries and the semiotic processes of their construction, navigation, and policing. I use the concept of commensurability to engage with questions of inclusion, alterity, an…
The Routledge Handbook of Language and Emotion
This chapter approaches religion – and specifically present-day lived religious expression – from the perspective of emotions and learning to work with emotions. The particular emphasis is an approach that understands emotions as dynamic ways to relate to the self, different kinds of others, and the world. This relationality is in many more or less subtle ways enhanced, guided and regulated by religious teachings and rituals. The dynamics of reli…

Emotion Pedagogies: What Are They, and Why Do They Matter
This introductory essay defines "emotion pedagogies" by identifying their distinctive qualities-an inclusive embrace of emotions often presented in the form of lists of emotion words to be spoken as part of "I-messages;" treating emotions as teachable skill bundles, like other sets of skills conveyed along the model of formal schooling and thus involving a high degree of curricularization; and finally, the spread of emotion pedagogies as reflecti…
