  • Faith in a Troubled Church and a Fragmented World

    Werner G Jeanrond•ARTICLE•Toronto Journal of Theology•2024

[Figure: see text] In this article, I discuss faith in a troubled Church and a fragmented world. I begin by asking how faith works, in general terms, before exploring the potential of a critical faith praxis in the Church and the world of today. Finally, I shall propose to relocate Christian faith praxis in the orbit of a theology of love

L’alternative pourrait consis…

  • Human hope and the reign of God

    Open Access•Werner G Jeanrond•ARTICLE•Dialog•2022

This article discusses the theological virtue of hope in relation to the Christian expectation of God's coming reign. Hope, as distinct from optimism and from all sorts of individualistic hopes, refers to God's gift of future. Hence, the tension between expecting God's coming reign, on the one hand, and the challenge of living constructively in the here and now, on the other hand, engages theological approaches to hope. It is argued that the divi…

  • Reasons to Hope

    Werner G Jeanrond•BOOK•Reasons to Hope•2020

Hope is approached here not only as an object of belief, but as a relational human praxis. Hope can be seen as a God-given gift which is essential for the life of people and their communities. Werner G. Jeanrond discusses different contemporary approaches to hope from salvation from this world to reconciliation with God, the neighbour and the emerging self in and with this universe. He examines various texts by Joseph Ratzinger, Robert Jenson and…

  • The Ambiguous Power of Prejudice and Love

    Open Access•Werner G Jeanrond•CHAPTER•Religious Stereotyping and…•2013

“Jews do not share things in common with Samaritans” (John 4.9). 1 This is the background information that some manuscripts of the Gospel of John inserted in the conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well (John 4.4–42). 2 As the story unfolds, listeners and readers also learn about the disciples’ astonishment that Jesus is seen to be speaking to a woman in public (4.27). This narrative confronts three kinds of stereoryping…

Di…

  • The Impact of Schleiermacher’s Hermeneutics on Contemporary Interpretation Theory

    Werner G Jeanrond•CHAPTER•Interpretation of Belief•1986

Until recently Friedrich Schleiermacher's thoughts on hermeneutics were not so widely acknowledged as his famous works on Religion, the theological curriculum and the Christian Faith. One reason for this was the state of their publication. Apart from his two addresses to the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin, which form a coherent text, Schleiermacher's reflections on hermeneutics are available to us mainly in the form of notes from lectures …
