  • The Catholic Clergy in the North Atlantic Area, 1763-1830: Patterns of Deviancy

    Open Access•Luca Codignola•ARTICLE•Almanack•2020•References: 13

In a very transnational fashion, priestly misbehavior is a constant feature in the primary sources dealing with the United States and British North America, including Québec, between 1763 and 1846. Rather than a catalogue of occurrences, this article briefly surveys the three main elements of such misbehavior, namely, illicit sex, immoderate drinking, and excessive avariciousness. It then suggests an interpretative grid where behavioral norms wer…

    Open Access•Luca Codignola•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2020

In 1682 the first of twenty-nine Franciscan Colégios Apostólicos de Propaganda Fide was founded in Querétaro, in Mexico (New Spain). Other colleges were later established in South America (ten) and Mexico (seven), as well as in Spain (seven)—about half of them in the second half of the eighteenth century. Hundreds of Franciscan friars trained in these colleges and made them the hub of further missionary expansion in the Iberian peninsula and in S…

Luca Codignola, M Elisabetta Tonizzi•ARTICLE•Journal of Modern Italian Studies•2008•References: 5

Drawing on extensive and original archival research, this article is the first to reconstruct the origins and historical development of the Swiss community of Genoa from the sixteenth to the late nineteenth century. During these four centuries, the Swiss were constant and significant agents of the Genoese economy and society. The Swiss presence in the city dates back to the mid 1500s, when Swiss soldiers were the predominant component of the army…

    Luca Codignola•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2007

This is not another tirade against the usual suspects—the greedy conquerors and their political commissaries, that is, the missionaries—pitted against a primitive and uniformly shaped Indian world. First of all, Why Have You Come Here? describes the Indians as diverse and multifaceted peoples (though they share some common elements) and as human beings. Secondly, the examination of contact as experienced in five Jesuit frontier outposts—Florida (…

  • Control and Order in French Colonial Louisbourg, 1713-1758

Luca Codignola, A Johnston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of American History•2002

Traditionally depicted as a failure, since it was conquered each time it was attacked (1745, 1758), French Louisbourg is now regarded as an ancien régime success story. Indeed, as A. J. B. (John) Johnston explains, Louisbourg was not a fort, but a full-fledged fortified town, the largest urban center of present-day Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia, established to safeguard the French cod fishery. All in all, the colony's cod fishery “returned th…

Less than a month later, on April 12, 1861, the Confederate action at Fort Sumter marked the beginning of the Civil War. Appar…
