Toward a Cross-Cultural Understanding of Work-Related Beliefs
Although psychology's contribution to a study of the Protestant Work Ethic (PWE) made a slow start we now have an impressive array of studies which have examined this construct, even cross-culturally, and find that not only is this construct seemingly alive and well, but also that it is espoused more strongly by non-Protestant and non-Western countries. Furnham (1990b) examined a composite of seven scales designed to measure the PWE, and found th…
Individualism-Collectivism Revisited
The constructs individualism and collectivism have been exten sively researched and written about by cross-cultural psychologists and seem to be widely accepted as important bases for explaining differences in behavior between people of diverse cultures. The Youth Culture Controversy: An Evaluation
Based on some evidence gathered from a study of early adolescents, this article attempts to resolve the "youth culture" controversy. It suggests that peer influence is strong during early adolescence but is limited only to certain areas of behavior which are largely allowed by parents. Furthermore, this trend of increased peer influence is symptomatic of a normal development toward autonomy and the forging of an individual identity. It is also ar…
Dimensionality of Rotter's I-E Scale in Sri Lanka
Research on Rotter's I-E Scale has shown that the scale does not measure a unidimensional trait. It is also argued that differences in the populations to which this scale is administered affect the factor structure obtained. The present study examines the structure of locus of control when applied to a sample of school-going adolescents in an urban region in Sri Lanka. A two-factor structure consisting of "Fatalism" and "Powerlessness" dimensions…
