  • The Framing of Feminists and Feminism in News and Public Affairs Programs in U.S. Electronic Media

Open Access•Rebecca Ann Lind, Colleen Salo•ARTICLE•Journal of Communication•2002

This research analyzes the representation of feminists and feminism in media (in part by comparing such representation to that of women) via content analysis of 35,000 hours of ABC, CNN, PBS, and NPR news and public affairs content. Feminists appear rarely and are often demonized. Although they are shown in a personalized and trivialized fashion, though, feminists are so represented less often than “regular” women. Feminists are less often victim…

  • Viewer Sensitivity to Ethical Issues in TV Coverage of the Clinton-Flowers Scandal

    Rebecca Ann Lind, David L Rarick•ARTICLE•Political Communication•1999•References: 9

One hundred eleven Chicago adults viewed an actual local television news story concerning Gennifer Flowers's allegations of an extramarital affair with then-presidential candidate Bill Clinton and responded to a structured interview that was transcribed and analyzed with a modified form of cognitive mapping. Viewers were mostly adept at noting relevant story characteristics but less able to discuss operative ethical issues in story reporting. Vie…

The concept of relevancy is used to analyze differences between African American and European American viewers’ readings of a TV news investigative report documenting discrimination in the housing industry. In 17 focus group discussions (8 Black, 9 White) lasting about two hours, four key relevancies were discovered: the relevancy of oppression, the relevancy of the problem of racism, the relevancy of the characters in the news story, and the rel…

  • How can TV news be improved

    Rebecca Ann Lind•ARTICLE•Journal of Broadcasting &…•1995•Cited by: 6•References: 5

Two separate studies investigated viewer considerations of how to improve TV news, and whether viewers had taken action to try to improve TV news. The studies found that viewers do not want their news limited, whether by the government, the industry, or even concerned viewers. In a striking contradiction, respondents charged the viewers themselves with the responsibility for improving TV news, yet few had ever done anything, claiming their action…

  • Public Attitudes Toward Ethical issues in TV Programming

Rebecca Ann Lind, David L Rarick•ARTICLE•Journal of Mass Media Ethics•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 4

Telephone survey of 293 TV viewers in Minneapolis-St. Paul investigated how viewers evaluate ethical issues and problematic content in TV news and entertainment programs, and attitudes toward methods of controlling TV content. In rating eight hypothetical news and entertainment scenarios, viewers appeared more willing to accept ethical breaches in entertainment than in news programs. In evaluating the severity of general problems in TV programmin…
