From Over‐Ideologisation to De‐Autonomisation
This article examines the foreign policy of the Milei government in Argentina. Its central argument is that the president's worldview—conceptualised as Western Supremacist Civilisationism—functions as a relatively closed cognitive schema that activates systematic heuristic shortcuts and produces what we call the paradox of power. Rather than generating diffuse costs, this worldview concentrates them structurally in exactly those domains where the…
The disruptive effect of Western supremacist civilizationism
This article argues that Southern Cone reactionary governments often tend to confront international and regional institutions. Evidence of this approach is found in the administrations of Jair Bolsonaro in Brazil (2019–22) and Javier Milei in Argentina (2023–), exhibiting various forms of confrontation. The analysis highlights two primary explanations: first, the distinct nature of reactionary governments based in a world view rooted in a Western…

The growing divide
In recent decades, the relationship between Argentina and Brazil was understood as an alliance sustained by common interests and shared values. We argue that this assumption no longer holds, and that the relationship is going through a growing divide. In this article, we examine the evolution of Argentina–Brazil relations and carry out a plausibility probe to test three explanations of their rise and decline. To do so, we look at the shifting pat…
As…
The Political and Economic Instability of Dilma Rousseff’s Second Government in Brazil
This article aims to describe the political and economic tensions experienced by Brazil, six months into the second term of President Dilma Rousseff. It also analyses whether the head of state can be subjected to political trial/impeachment as a result of corruption charges, and attempts to explain the government’s strategy to try to get out of the quagmire by means of a pragmatic twist, away from the premises of the electoral campaign
