Multimodality and Technology
There is a close historical association between multimodality and technology, in two senses. First, technologies have enabled a significant expansion of the range of media by which humans communicate, especially in terms of recording, replaying, and transmitting across time and space (that is, mediating) multimodal discourse.
Multimodal Text Analysis
Multimodal text analysis has become a crucial part of research, teaching, and practice for a wide range of academic and practical disciplines.
O'Toole, Michael
Michael O'Toole, also known as Lawrence M. O'Toole (1934– ), Emeritus Professor of communication studies at Murdoch University, Western Australia, has a long and distinguished career in applied linguistics, including the development of pioneering approaches to language studies and multimodal semiotic analysis, culminating in his highly influential systemic functional (SF) approach to displayed art, which has provided a foundation for contemporary…
Thibault, Paul
Paul J. Thibault (b. 1953) has a distinguished research background in general and applied linguistics in areas relating to the sociocultural and biological‐physical dimensions of human meaning‐making activity, which he has developed into a transdisciplinary field of knowledge involving social semiotics, cognitive science, psychology, biology, and complex dynamical systems theory.
Bias in GenAI: Exploring cultural variations between large language models
GenAI outputs exhibit recurring discursive tendencies of positivity in representations of culturally and linguistically responsive teaching (CLRT), with ChatGPT commonly construing CLRT through a depoliticised, “feel-good” multicultural frame, and Ernie Bot more often articulating harmony-centred representations. • While ChatGPT explicitly acknowledges the possibility of bias, its outputs tend to treat visual representations as self-evidently inc…

Government nation building and memetic reactions: Different visions of the UK in Covid-19 related communication
The UK government uses news conferences, press releases, official websites, mainstream and social media to provide advice and information about the COVID-19 pandemic. This information has become ‘source material’ for social media users to react to government announcements in ‘digital popular culture’; that is, memes and short videos shared on social media. Close examinations of both reveal how different views of the nation are articulated whilst …
Developing Misinformation Immunity: How to Reason-Check Fallacious News in a Human-Computer Interaction Environment
To counter the fake news phenomenon, the scholarly community has attempted to debunk and prebunk disinformation. However, misinformation still constitutes a major challenge due to the variety of misleading techniques and their continuous updates which call for the exercise of critical thinking to build resilience. In this study we present two open access chatbots, the Fake News Immunity Chatbot and the Vaccinating News Chatbot, which combine Fall…
Managing higher education and neoliberal marketing discourses on Why Choose webpages for international students on Australian and British university websites
International education is impacted by multiple discourses, in particular the discourse of university as an educational institution responsible for producing and curating knowledge for the public good, pursuing truth and transforming student life, and the neoliberal marketing discourse which portrays the university as a business organization providing a service for international students as customers/consumers. Following a multimodal discourse an…
Developing Fake News Immunity: Fallacies as Misinformation Triggers During the Pandemic
Misinformation constitutes one of the main challenges to counter the infodemic: misleading news, even if not blatantly false, can cause harm especially in crisis scenarios such as the pandemic. Due to the fast proliferation of information across digital media, human fact-checkers struggle to keep up with fake news, while automatic fact-checkers are not able to identify the grey area of misinformation. We, thus, propose to reverse engineer the man…
Matter, meaning and semiotics
We inhabit two worlds – the world of matter and the world of meaning (see Halliday, ‘On matter and meaning: The two realms of human experience, 2005). In this article, these two worlds and the physical, biological, social and semiotic systems that connect them are investigated. In this respect, semiotic systems are the most complex because they involve physical systems (the material sign), biological systems (human beings), social systems (societ…

Analyzing the talking book Imagine a world: A multimodal approach to English language learning in a multilingual context
In recent years there has been increased academic and professional interest and awareness in approaches to English language teaching (ELT) that take a plurilingual approach. This is often combined with a multimodal stance. The outcome of this combination is an approach to English language teaching that integrates multiple languages and multiple semiotic resources. This paper examines how a plurilingual approach to ELT can be viewed through a mult…
Semiotic space invasion: The case of Donald Trump's US presidential campaign

A multimodal approach to visual thinking: The scientific sketchnote
There is a growing interest in the use of visual thinking techniques for promoting conceptual thinking in problem solving tasks as well as for reducing the complexity of ideas expressed in scientific and technical formats. The products of visual thinking, such as sketchnotes, graphics and diagrams, consist of ‘multimodal complexes’ that combine language, images, mathematical symbolism and various other semiotic resources. This article adopts a so…

For comparison, text of articles found by reve…
Hijacking the dispatch protocol: When callers pre-empt their reason-for-the-call in emergency calls about cardiac arrest
This article examines emergency ambulance calls made by lay callers for patients found to be in cardiac arrest when the paramedics arrived. Using conversation analysis, we explored the trajectories of calls in which the caller, before being asked by the call-taker, said why they were calling, that is, calls in which callers pre-empted a reason-for-the-call. Caller pre-emption can be disruptive when call-takers first need to obtain an address and …

The SF-MDA approach developed in this article explores the meaning arising through the use of language and visual imagery in printed texts. This involves inves…
Intersemiotic Texture: Analyzing cohesive devices between language and images
Recent research on multimodal discourse has explored the nature of semantic relations between different semiotic resources. Drawing on the interpretation of language as a social semiotic resource, this article proposes Intersemiotic Texture as the crucial property of coherent multimodal texts and presents a preliminary framework for cohesive devices between language and images. The framework is illustrated through examination of print media to de…

Multimodal analysis within an interactive software environment: Critical discourse perspectives
Critical discourse analysts are increasingly required to account for multimodal phenomena constructed through language and other resources (e.g. images, sound and music) and to relate high-level critical insights on the social motivations of these texts to their realizations in low-level expressive phenomena, and vice versa. In this paper, we use interactive software resources for critical multimodal discourse analysis (O'Halloran, K.L. (2011b). …
