Management of technological innovation: High tech R&D in the GDR
Fundamental changes in the management of technological innovation took place over the course of the 40-year history of the German Democratic Republic. This article analyzes management culture in electronics and microelectronics R&D, as well as at Carl Zeiss Jena. R&D directors of the 1950s and 1960s, whose careers started in the Weimar or Nazi era, had a professional ethos and managerial style not rooted in state socialism. This article analyzes …
A strid M. E ckert . West Germany and the Iron Curtain: Environment, Economy, and Culture in the Borderlands
We think of borderlands as places of lively intercultural and economic exchange. However, the borderlands that are the subject of Astrid M. Eckert’s excellent study West Germany and the Iron Curtain: Environment, Economy, and Culture in the Borderlands are of an unusual kind, created by the political and military divisions of the Cold War or, to be more exact, the German Democratic Republic’s (GDR, commonly referred to as East Germany) fortificat…

Taking on Technocracy: Nuclear Power in Germany, 1945 to the Present
The Nuclear Crisis: The Arms Race, Cold War Anxiety, and the German Peace Movement of the 1980s
This volume of essays joins the growing literature on Germany in the 1980s, a contradictory decade marked by both political polarization and bridge-building. It focuses on the ‘nuclear crisis’—strategic, political and cultural—precipitated by the Soviet deployment of medium-range SS-20 missiles and the NATO response. Both sides feared that these Euromissiles could undermine nuclear deterrence by making limited nuclear war possible. The NATO Doubl…
Red Prometheus: Engineering and Dictatorship in East Germany, 1945-1990
This analysis of the relationship between science and totalitarian rule in one of the most technically advanced countries in the East bloc examines professional autonomy under dictatorship and the place of technology in Communist ideology. In Cold War-era East Germany, the German tradition of science-based technology merged with a socialist system that made technological progress central to its ideology. Technology became an important part of Eas…
The Impact of Two Reunification-Era Debates on the East German Sense of Identity
Constructing Socialism. Technology and Change in East Germany, 1945-1990
Trabant cars carried many East Germans westward after the Berlin Wall came down in November 1989. The car's 1950s design, obvious environmental incorrectness and all-plastic body became a symbol of the technological limitations of East German communism. But as Raymond G. Stokes points out in this text, eastern Germany in 1945 was one of the most highly developed, technologically sophisticated industrial areas in the world. Despite the evident fai…

The Business Elites of Hamburg and Berlin
In many respects, Hamburg and Berlin represent two societal models at work in Wilhelmian Germany. Hamburg and the other Hanseatic cities, Lübeck and Bremen, have traditionally been thought to represent bourgeois society as it might have been in Germany as a whole: self-assured, liberal, and antiaristocratic. Historians are generally in agreement with Richard J. Evans in his assertion that “neither the economic activity nor the social world nor fi…
