Expanding Ethnographic Agencies
Curators: Alexandra Mack (Ad Hoc) & Emma Saunders (Empathy) This Pecha Kucha session explores agency through a broad lens.It encompasses not just the agency of the people--and machines--on which we may focus our ethnographic lens, but also the agency that we as ethnographers exercise, knowingly or unknowingly. As we engage with our subjects, we become participants in their world, and our investment in that world impacts both how we view it and how…

Changing the Perspective of Government
This case study highlights the value of ethnography in changing a client's perspective. New Zealand's productivity has been deceasing, and the government wants to reverse that trend. Empathy's government client believed that macro-level forces were having a major impact on the productivity of small businesses, and wanted to suggest ways for small businesses to directly combat those forces. Empathy conducted ethnographic research, and the results …
Enabling Ethnography in Small Budget Economies

Mysticism: Christian and Buddhist
If the Western world knows anything about Zen Buddhism, it is down to the efforts of one remarkable man, D.T. Suzuki. The twenty-seven year-old Japanese scholar first visited the West in 1897, and over the course of the next seventy years became the world's leading authority on Zen. His radical and penetrating insights earned him many disciples, from Carl Jung to Allen Ginsberg, from Thomas Merton to John Cage. In Mysticism: Christian and Buddhis…
