Primary double teeth in archeological medieval material from the area of Poland
The aim of this study was to investigate primary double teeth in archeological material from the area of Poland and a brief review of the literature on the subject. Two cases of fusion of anterior primary teeth in two infants from past populations living in eastern (8th–9th cent. CE) and southern (15th cent. CE) parts of Poland are presented. A macroscopic as well as a radiographic assessment of the teeth was performed, which, in case 1, included…
Morphology and morphometry of frontal sinuses as a tool in sex determination based on 17th-18th century skulls from Poland
Morphological analysis of the frontal sinuses (FS) is one of the methods used to assess the sex of human remains. Depending on the methods, the results indicate the effectiveness of using the FS in the assessment of sex at the level of 60-85.9%. Our goal was to determine whether the morphological and morphometric methods of sex assessment based on the FS can be used for examining historical populations in anthropological studies. We assessed FS b…

The Influence of Socioeconomic Factors on the Body Characteristics, Proportion, and Health Behavior of Children Aged 6–12 Years
It was concluded that the development environment of the parents, such as their level of education and profession, play a more important role than the size of birthplace
Influence of body build on hand grip strength, simple reaction time and strength of the abdominal muscles in prepubertal children
< 0.05 were used. Children with normal BMI values are characterized by better simple reaction time than their obese peers, while overweight and obese children estimated on the basis of BMI, AHtR and body fat perform were better in hand grip strength. In the case of strength of the abdominal muscles, there were no differences in children with different body build. The normal build and body weight promotes the proper development of children, which …
Differences in lifestyle between students of medical and biological fields of study in Poland
Students are a specific social group characterized by different lifestyle behaviours. The aim of the study was to determine whether there are lifestyle differences between students of medical and biological fields from three different universities in Poland. The research material consisted of answers from 1163 students (781 women and 382 men), aged 17.5- 26.0 from the medical faculty of the Wroclaw Medical University, biological faculties of the …
The plague's impact paleodemographic and genetic measures in 15th to 16th century Gdańsk
Yersinia pestis caused plagues and haunted Gdańsk several times during the 15th and 16th centuries. This study focuses on the following demographic effects: 1/ distributions of deceased by age in a plagued city, 2/ parameters of the life tables, 3/ estimation of the natural increase. To assess genetic effects of the plague, measures of the opportunity for natural selection were considered. Skeletal remains of 283 people from the 15th - 16th centu…

Urban and rural differences in mortality and causes of death in historical Poland
The purpose of this paper is to document and interpret urban‐rural differences in mortality in the past. To this end, we used data on mortality in Wielkopolska, Poland, in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. The data on mortality in rural areas (N = 1,173,910 deceased), small towns (N = 573,903 deceased), and Poznań, the capital of the Wielkopolska region (N = 86,352 deceased), were gathered from original Prussian statistic…
Demographic trends and biological status of historic populations from Central Poland
The microregion of Ostrów Lednicki in the province of Wielkopolska was the center of the formation of the Polish State in Early Middle Ages. The analysis of skeletal remains and parish records from the region documented the biological status of inhabitants and its changes over a millennium. The study material comprised 424 human skeletons from an Early Medieval burial ground on Lake Lednica, records of 2,704 deaths from the registers of the Roman…
The fertility of women Poland in the period of trasformation of the political and economics system (the 80’s and 90’s)
Nutritional habits and the structure of consumption in the Kashubian population of the town of Jastarnia (the Hel Peninsula)
The first part of the present study is a description of the Kashubian population inhabiting the Hel Peninsula. Further, the author follows the changes of the dietary pattern and the nutritional habits of this population over a span of more than one hundred years. The past nutritional habits (prevailing in the 18th century and in the first half of the 20th century) were reproduced on the basis of ethnographic source materials. The present day diet…
Mortality in the populations of Danzig and the District of Danzig ("Regierungsbezirk Danzig") in the second half of the nineteenth century
The study concerning the populations of: the city of Danzig, Kartuzy County and the whole District of Danzig (Regierungsbezirk Danzig) has been based on demographic data from German yearbooks published in the second half of the nineteenth century and at the beginning of the twentieth century. The research has covered the period between 1855 and 1879 for the city of Danzig and between 1860 and 1869 for the District of Danzig. For selected years so…

Cechy dermatoglificzne człowieka. Przegląd koncepcji i metod badań
The review was made from the point of view of genetic transmission, source of variability, morphogenesis and functional significance of these traits in men. While pointing the reasons of hitherto failures in solving the primary problems, the difficulties in defining the traits were stressed. The critical review on some dermatoglyphic opinions and new trends of researches in Poland and in the world were presented
Kształt głowy a cechy miednicy żeńskiej. Jeszcze o brachycefalizacji
Looking for the mechanism of brachycephalization attention was focused on the connection between the size of female pelvis and the shape of her head. The size and shape of the small pelvis could have a connection with fertility. This problem was studied on bone material analysing traces of pregnancies and deliveries
Mechanizm procesu brachycefalizacji
Some authors maintain that the „process of brachycephalization is a result of natural selection operation through differential fertility and mortality. Mortality differences were clearly shown between groups of individuals with different head shapes, but causes of deaths were not known. ‘The present paper is an attempt at explanation of these causes, Among 150 male and 150 female medical students it has been found that individuals with shorter he…
Wielkość głowy a inteligencja
In the present paper a hypothesis is advanced stating that in man there is no direct link between intelligence and body size, most specifically head size (brain size), within normal ranges of their variability. Considerable variability of human intelligence, being undoubtedly, though only partly, heritable [Cavalli-Sforza and Bodmer 1971] must be therefore based upon physiological and biochemical variability of brain, but not upon its macrostruct…
Ciałopalne cmentarzysko kultury przeworskiej w Bieżyniu (stanowisko 1) w świetle badań antropologicznych
The paper presents results of morphological analysis of cremated bones of 67 individuals (76 subadults, 28 adults and 13 “indeterminable” ones) buried at a cemetery of Przeworsk Culture dated at stages B1, and B2, of the Roman Period. The state of preservation of human remains was bad, so that sex was ascertained only in 14 cases (8 males, 6 females). Elaboration of the material was carried with use of commonly accepted in physical anthropology a…
Udział czynników genetycznych i środowiskowych w kształtowaniu zmienności cech dermatoglificznych
The author has applied analysis of variance procedures to quantitative dermatoglyphic traits: finger ridge counts and interdigital ridge counts (a-b, b-c, c-d as well as their sum a-d). The material comprises finger and palm prints of both hands of about 200 males. The analysis of variance is based on an assertion that differences between two antimeres of the same individual may be formally treated as those between monozygotic twins, since regula…
Próba obiektywizacji opisu zmienności cech dermatoglificznych
After discussing briefly still existing uncertainties as to the mode of determination and ontogenetic formation of dermatoglyphs, the authors conclude that definitions of dermatoglyphic characters should be constructed in a way relating features of ridged skin to the morphology of anatomical regions covered by it and allowing for precise, quantitative analysis. Along these lines, quantitative characters analyzed in the present paper are construct…
