  • Polizeiarbeit mit psychisch belasteten Personen

Open Access•Erik Piñeiro, Krzysztof Skuza et al.•ARTICLE•Soziale Passagen•2024

  • Policing the In/Exclusion of Social Marginality

    Open Access•Erik Piñeiro, Nathalie Pasche et al.•ARTICLE•Social Inclusion•2023•Cited by: 1•References: 10

Urban spaces are always contested and, as such, permeated by processes of inclusion and exclusion. Since the 2000s, new types of governmental public order services have been established in Switzerland specialized in dealing with socially marginalized individuals, groups, or areas. Without having police powers, they proceed with socio‐communicative methods typical in outreach social work. Based on our ethnographic research and drawing on Foucault‐…

  • The art of soft power banishment. New insights into the Swiss deportation regime

Open Access•Erik Piñeiro, Nora Locher et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnic and Racial Studies•2022

In the second half of the 1990s, Switzerland established a new state regime of spatial-territorial exclusion in order to keep people out of certain urban areas. From a power-analytical perspective, this reveals a repressive sovereign power banishment. At the same time, novel organizations for outreach social work with public order service tasks emerged, using softer governmental tactics of spatial exclusion. Using two empirical case examples from…

  • Un/Doing Ethnicity in Intervening Swiss Street-Level Bureaucracy. A Police Service and a Child Welfare Service – an Ethnographic Perspective

Open Access•Erik Piñeiro, Esteban Piñeiro et al.•ARTICLE•Swiss Journal of Sociology•2019

The article presents the empirical findings of a multi-site ethnography in two organizations in Swiss street-level bureaucracy. We examined both a municipal child welfare office and the police force of a medium-sized city. The focus was on the question as to whether and how ethnic differentiation takes place in such public agencies and what role it plays at work. The findings suggest that un/doing ethnicity follows an instrumental logic and that …

  • Aesthetics, performativity and resistance in the narratives of a computer programming community

    Open Access•Peter Case, Erik Piñeiro•ARTICLE•Human Relations•2006•Cited by: 9•References: 21

This article reports on an empirical study of a computer programmer community, focusing on online exchanges in which participants discuss the aesthetics of coding. Naturalistic data were collected during a 12-month period of non-participant observation of the software community in question. The authors estimate that approximately 200 participants are represented in the main dataset. Narrative data are presented under two interpretative rubrics: ‘…

  • Instrumentality

    Erik Piñeiro•ARTICLE•Consumption Markets & Culture•2002

In this paper I want to describe a way to explain the beauty of instrumental action. Instrumental action is, in this paper, any action whose goal lies outside the action itself. Most of our everyday actions could be included in this category: driving to work, taking the buss, writing memos, letters and e-mails, designing cars, managing organisations, etc. We do not do these things for their own sake, we do them in order to attain some other goal.…
