This article documents the use of historical GIS with timestamped itineraries to better understand a large multilingual corpus of nineteenth-century travelogues about Spain and their diverse ‘chronotopes’ (meaningful intersections of space and time in a narrative, as defined by Mikhail Bakhtin), which remain unnoticeable when one reads travelogues as traditional literary texts. Looking at Picasso’s Guernica after the Barcelona May Days of 1937
For people in Picasso’s circle, Guernica was not about the bombing of Gernika. The artist’s work on the piece overlapped with the “civil war within the civil war” between Communists and anarchists on the streets of Barcelona on 2–8 May 1937 and the dismantlement of the non-Stalinist Marxist party called POUM (Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista). This article examines the debates about the Andalusian ‘bandoleros’ (bandits) in the context of early tourism as a state-guided policy in Spain. As we argue, the development of tourism made Spanish intellectuals reconsider the real armed activity in Andalucía as part of Spanish national heritage and a tourist attraction.
