Little Cash, Little Carry
Using high-frequency data on households’ item-level purchases from Tanzania, we show that liquidity constraints keep the poor from using bulk discounts consistently. On average, households save roughly 20% during the ‘flush’ days of the month, which comes from buying in bulk, and the poorest save over 30%. It is hard for protagonists to tell their part in controversial events without coming out a little self-serving, and that seld…
Escaping Local Risk by Entering Indentureship
Of the millions of Indians who migrated internationally in the long nineteenth century, over one million went as indentured servants in a massive South-South migration. I test how price volatility in origin markets in India affected out-migration under indentureship contracts from 1873-1916 to four major destinations around the world. Using new, unique district-level flows calculated from roughly 250,000 individual records, I show that indentures…
The locus of financial regulation
If the G's are the world's steering committee, the step from G7 to G20 deepened the democratic legitimacy of this committee. However, it also shifted influence to a group that share little else other than economic power: they have diverse experiences, challenges, cultural perspectives and starting points. This is particularly the case in the field of financial regulation, where action across these countries in recent months—despite all the langua…
