When Vitasoy began making and selling soybean milk in 1940, the materiality of the milk bottle underscored and participated in assembling producers and consumers in both productive and problematic ways. This essay explores the scientific lives of two Republican-period institutions: the Henry Lester Institute of Medical Research, based in Shanghai; and the Chongqing No. 3 Children's Home. Despite their differences, these two spaces sheltered and nurtured scientific experimentation and functioned as heterotopic sites that controlled who could produce scientific knowledge and which kinds of scientific objects could become visible. Measuring Up
This article is an exploration of the ways in which anthropometrics were incorporated into medical and public health practice in China during the first half of the twentieth century. The author argues that Chinese anthropometrics satisfied two contradictory imperatives. It reaffirmed racist articulations of difference that emphasized Chinese weakness and inadequacy. But it also nurtured a discourse for Chinese initiative and self-transformation. …
