Sociopolitical Roles of Muslim Clerics and Scholars in West Africa
Islamization in West Africa reached a dramatic climax in the militant reform movements of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The introduction of Islamic elements into African societies was in symbiosis with traditional customs and beliefs, the dynamics of which may be seen in terms of a continuum between two opposing poles: tradition and Islam. There are numerous accounts, the earliest going back to al-Bakri of the eleventh century, of the …
Aspects of Islamization: Weber’s Observations on Islam Reconsidered
This chapter examines some of Max Weber’s statements concerning Islam, mainly by reviewing several aspects of Islamization. It argues that rather than a regression from what had first been a missionary religion, as implied by Weber’s writings, there was a progression from Arab particularism to Islamic universalism. Much of what Weber wrote about Islam is unacceptable to contemporary scholarship on Islam, but some of his observations offer insight…

Chronicles from Gonja: A Tradition of West African Muslim Historiography
The old kingdom of Gonja, founded by immigrant horsemen of Malian origins in the mid-sixteenth century, lies in the north of the Republic of Ghana. Historians of Gonja are fortunate in having access to chronicles of local authorship, written in Arabic. This book traces the development of that historiographical tradition and shows that by the early eighteenth century scholars in Gonja were not only maintaining annals but were also committing to wr…

Ibn-Ḥawqal, The Cheque, and Awdaghost
It is generally accepted that Ibn-Ḥawqal crossed the Sahara and visited Awdaghost in 951/2 to be the first Arab geographer who reached the gates of bilād al-Sūdān . This is inferred from what he says about a cheque he saw in Awdaghost. A critical analysis of the references to this cheque suggests that it was a bill of debt owed by a trader from Sijilmāsa resident at Awdaghost to another trader from Sijilmāsa. The transactions between the two were…

A seventeenth-century chronicle by Ibn al-mukhtār: A critical study of Ta'rīkh al-fattāsh
In 1853, Heinrich Barth visited Timbuktu, and 'was so successful as to have an opportunity of pursuing a complete history of the Kingdom of Songhay. ... These annals, according to the universal statement of the learned people of Negroland, were written by a distinguished person of the name of Ahmed Baba'. With this chronicle at his disposal, Barth was able, for the first time, to present a meaningful outline of the history of the Songhay empire. …
The Thirteenth- and Fourteenth-Century Kings of Mali
The three most important Arabic sources for the Empire of Mali at its height are Ibn Fadl-Allāh al-‘Umari, Ibn-Baṭṭüṭa, and Ibn-Khaldūn. These authors all had good opportunities to collect information on this remote empire. Al-‘Umarī, who wrote in 1342–9, reflects the impression that Mansä Müsā had left in Cairo during his pilgrimage. In all probability, he had not himself met Mansā Mūsā in person, but he had talked with people who had met the Su…

ALMORAVIDS AND ALMOHADS TO c. 1250 During the second half of the eleventh century the Almoravids, who had emerged from the south-western Sahara, extended their conquests from Ghana in the south, and over the Maghrib to Spain in the north. Morocco, which had previously been divided among rival dynasties, was united and began to assume its own political identity. Muslim Spain, which had previously attempted to exert political influence over Morocco…

The Sahara and the Sudan from the Arab conquest of the Maghrib to the rise of the Almoravids
The Saharan trade and the introduction of Islam were the two principal external factors in the history of West Africa before 1500. The journey across the Sahara with slaves must have been extremely difficult and exhausting. This is fully borne out in an anecdote about an Ibāḍī from Wargla in the eleventh century. The Umayyad government sought to encourage the flow of gold from the Sudan. But direct imperial involvement in the organization of the …
Ancient Ghana: A Reassessment of some Arabie Sources
Les trois notes présentées ici visent à réévaluer certaines références à l'ancien Ghana des sources arabes médiévales. 1.

Conversion to Islam
Across the barriers of climate and culture in Asia and Africa, Islam has won converts and has been adopted by entire ethnic groups. From its dramatic emergence in the Arabian Peninsula in the 7th century to its spread across Africa in modern times, Islam has had a major impact on all forms of life. The essays in the volume span 13 centuries of Islam history. The important distinctions between conversion through military conquest and that through …
