Cultural Fusion in Late Bronze Age Goldwork: Diadems and Mouth‐pieces From Hala Sultan Tekke, Cyprus
This study investigates recently discovered gold diadems and mouth‐pieces from seven chamber tombs and one shaft tomb at the Late Bronze Age cemetery of Hala Sultan Tekke, dating from the fifteenth to the thirteenth centuries BC. The chamber tombs, all containing multi‐generational burials, yielded a variety of ornaments, which are analysed in terms of typology, patterns of use, and their associations with age and sex. This study deals with the results of the 2023 fieldwork at the extramural cemetery of the Late Bronze Age harbour city of Hala Sultan Tekke. One of the three excavated tombs in 2023 was the undisturbed Chamber Tomb XX, which is dated around 1300 BC. In 2021 and 2022, the 13th and 14th seasons of excavations at the Late Bronze Age site of Hala Sultan Tekke were carried out in Area A, and as a result of these investigations numerous tombs were found. A carved bone handle (?) was found by the Swedish Jordan Expediton in 1992 at Tell Abu al-Kharaz in a building within the Iron Age I–II citadel. The building was destroyed in afierce conflagration, dated c. 800 B.C., according to analysis of the ceramics.
