  • What is the Meaning of Meaning in Paul Tillich's Theology

    Open Access•Steven Cassedy•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2018

One of the most frequently occurring terms in Paul Tillich's theology is meaning (in his English writings) or Sinn (in his German writings). But Tillich used both in multiple senses, without acknowledging or even appearing to be aware that he was doing so. He wrote only in German till he immigrated to the United States at the age of forty-seven. He used the German Sinn abundantly in his native tongue, and with a variety of meanings: a universal m…

  • Beethoven the Romantic

Steven Cassedy•ARTICLE•Journal of the History of Ideas•2010

In July 1809, E. T. A. Hoffmann received a copy of the score to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony and in July 1810, he published a review of the Fifth Symphony in the German journal for music criticism Allgemeine musikalische Zeitung . Hoffmann need not have actually heard a performance; in his review, the purely musical analysis could easily have been based entirely on his reading of the score. In its basic structure, the review follows the pattern of …

  • Dostoevsky's Democracy

Steven Cassedy, Cassedy•ARTICLE•Journal of Church and State•2009

If you pick up a book on the concept of democracy in nineteenth-century Russia, you will need to know that the words democracy and democrat mean something rather different from what we might expect in the United States. When Turgenev, in a letter to a friend, described the hero of Fathers and Sons as a “democrat to the fingertips,” he was not referring to Bazarov's embrace of Enlightenment-era social contract theory. He had in mind his hero's abi…

Steven Cassedy, Irina Paperno et al.•ARTICLE•The Russian Review•1996•Cited by: 2

Russian Modernists advanced a view of art as an active creative force destined for the creation not of artistic texts, but of life itself, and a view of life as an object of artistic creation. The contributors show that the Russian notion of 'life-creation' was by no means limited to deliberate aesthetic organisation of behaviour - it was an aesthetic utopia that informed public and private projects of the reorganisation of the world, from human …
