Why P Values Are Not a Useful Measure of Evidence in Statistical Significance Testing
Reporting p values from statistical significance tests is common in psychology's empirical literature. Sir Ronald Fisher saw the p value as playing a useful role in knowledge development by acting as an `objective' measure of inductive evidence against the null hypothesis. We review several reasons why the p value is an unobjective and inadequate measure of evidence when statistically testing hypotheses. A common theme throughout many of these re…
Academic Research and Teaching Quality: The views of undergraduate and postgraduate students
Undergraduate and postgraduate students drawn from eight different disciplines at a UK university were asked to participate in structured discussions of the effects of lecturer research activity upon student learning. Both samples showed a substantial preponderance of positive over negative comments. In both groups, the frequency of positive comments about lecturer research activity increased as the quantity and quality of research in their disci…
The Role of Information and Communication Technologies in a University Learning Environment
This article reports three related studies which investigate how undergraduates use and think about information and communication technologies (ICT) in the context of learning at university. Data were obtained via questionnaires, computer diary records and focus group discussions. The studies were intended to help universities decide how to incorporate ICT into student learning, how the cost of equipment should be shared between students and inst…
Academic research and student motivation
This article reports an investigation into the relationship between student perceptions of lecturer research and motivation to study at university. A 71-item, Likert-type questionnaire was completed by 100 Oxford Brookes University final year undergraduates. The pattern of correlation between variables together with the results of a factor analysis, suggests that a relationship exists between type of student motivation and attitude to faculty res…
Teaching and research: Student perspectives and policy implications
Previous research on the vital but vexed relationship between teaching and research is reviewed and criticised for an overemphasis on correlational studies and for largely neglecting student perspectives on staff research. We present a research study on this issue using focus groups of undergraduate students from a range of disciplines in one institution. Students perceived clear benefits from staff research, including staff enthusiasm and the cr…
