E-commerce as a battlefield in the US–China tech race
The competition between the United States and China is often framed as a second Cold War. While the first Cold War coincided with rising wages, at least within European welfare states, today's rivalry tends toward a race to the bottom in labour conditions. Contemporary strategic competition is driven less by ideology and more by the pursuit of influence through control over productive, financial, and digital infrastructures, where labour exploita…
Social Formation and Mode of Production
The debate on how to theorize the coexistence of several relations of production, forms of labor, and various modes of production in a given society has a longer history in Marxism. In the 1970s, a lively debate emerged between various schools of thought, from French Marxist anthropologists Emmanuel Terray and Pierre-Philippe Rey, to Pakistani sociologist Hamza Alavi and finally to South African Marxist Harold Wolpe (to name just a few) on how to…
The ambiguity of working class interests in Brazilian road transport
In many theories on working class power, the formation and existence of the interests of workers is assumed as a given, although it requires political processes for these interests to emerge at all. While this process often remains hidden behind assumptions that trade unions simply represent given economic concerns of workers, the ambiguity and fragility of the formation of working class interests is visible in situations in which the status of t…
Transnational socioeconomic protest in Europe since 1997
This paper draws on a novel database of 360 collective transnational socioeconomic protest actions across Europe that we found in a comprehensive, multilingual set of labour-related news outlets from 1997 to 2020. We discovered that the number of transnational protest actions doubled from 61 (1997–2002) to 125 (2015–2020). This is surprising, as unions seemed to be retreating everywhere. This study assesses two explanations for this development –…
Connected in the struggle
Mobilizations of truck drivers and delivery workers in Brazil in 2018 and 2020-2021, key moments of recent labour mobilizations, relied heavily on the use of social media. We evaluate the usefulness of social media in terms of three aspects: (a) to what extent has social media been useful in creating a collective worker identity; (b) has the use of social media facilitated democracy within workers' organizations and (c) how secure has the use of …
From the Structures of Capitalism to Power of Workers
Racial Capitalism and Global Labour Studies – a Missed Encounter
Despite of the centrality of the topic of labour in the 1983 book by Cedric Robinson, Black Marxism, global labour studies have devoted little attention to the concept of racial capitalism that became established with Robinson’s book. Robinson’s main claim is that the first proletariat formed in the plantations in colonized countries from about the 16th century, calling into question the crucial relevance of the industrial proletariat in England …
Employment conditions, conflicts, and new challenges along the transport-logistics chain
Logistics, understood as a management tool for the flow of goods and transport, has emerged as a strategic aspect of the economy. The complexity of a logistics transport chain is correlated with the increasing structuring of firms into networks and the fragmentation of global value chains. While the modern economy demands greater synchronization, the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted that a disruption to any link in the chain can have systemic impact…

Leapfrog logistics
Critical political economy analyses have principally conceptualised platforms as unproductive economic forms (rentier capital) skimming value off each intermediated transaction and/or illegitimately extracting and capitalizing user data. This scholarship has also focused heavily on extractive dimensions of global North platforms' operations within the global South. However, a small but growing literature is examining the productive aspects of digit…
Repensando O Trabalho Informal E Reprodutivo

Labour conflicts in the Global South
This article reflects on the insights generated by the contributions to the special issue on labour conflicts in the Global South. We emphasize first the need to go beyond Eurocentric industrial relations concepts forged in the historically specific circumstances of post-World War II industrialized countries. This also includes going beyond the fetishism of regarding trade unions as the privileged agents of workers’ interests. As the various empi…
Labour conflicts in the Global South
This article provides an introduction to the special issue on labour conflicts in the Global South. We will first conceptualize the internal relations between structure and agency on the basis of a historical materialist approach in order to assess the strategies of workers within a rapidly changing global capitalism. Second, in order to avoid economic reductionism we will conceptualize the internal relations between class, gender and race to acc…
From industrial relations research to Global Labour Studies
The traditional industrial relations approach – focused on the state, employers and unions as main actors – faces severe limits in its capacity to analyse labour conflict in the face of the specific forms of labour regulation in the Global South. This contribution argues that a solid theoretical framework for Global Labour Studies requires a critique of its forerunner, the industrial relations approach. A globally relevant understanding of labour…
Do choke points provide workers in logistics with power? A critique of the power resources approach in light of the 2018 truckers’ strike in Brazil
Choke points in transport and logistics have been identified as devices of the power of workers in these sectors. The 11 day long strike of around 400,000 Brazilian truck drivers at more than 750 blockades in May 2018 exercised an effective blockade of the national economy but only led to meagre results. The article asks how this mismatch between the power to block the flow of goods and the lack of power to achieve significant improvements of the…

Global Economic Planning as a Challenge for the Labour Movement
The central line of argument in this contribution is that the urgency of the economic, social and environmental crises demands to go beyond the institutionalist efforts to install more Global Framework Agreements or Decent Work Campaigns that often only come with piecemeal changes, if at all. The social uprisings in various countries around the globe that erupted in 2019 and 2020 underline the emerging pressure towards a broader vision of systemi…

Times of Upheaval and Uncertainty
We live in times of upheaval and uncertainty." In the age of COVID-19, it has become practically obligatory for all of us to include such a phrase in our communications. But we wrote this in our January 2020 editorial, a couple of months before we knew that a global pandemic would turn our world inside out. At the time, we noted such developments as the rise of the far right in many nations, the global climate crisis, increasing precarity, protes…

Human body symmetry and immune efficacy in healthy adults
OBJECTIVES: More symmetric organisms are perceived as more attractive. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) i.e. small, random deviations from perfect bilateral symmetry, is supposed to inform about developmental instability. According to the good genes hypothesis, a low level of FA is a putative cue to an organism's biological quality. An important aspect of this quality is the immune system functioning. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relations…
Mass Strikes in India and Brazil as the Terrain for a New Social Movement Unionism
Since the outbreak of the global economic crisis of 2008, many countries have witnessed labour unrest and industrial action. In the recent wave of mass strikes in emerging economies, one salient feature has been the forging of new forms of cooperation between workers' struggles and other social movements. Yet research on protest movements after 2008 has largely failed to consider these mass strikes or the organizational forms that erupted in thei…

Nicos Poulantzas’s Analysis of Gender Relations and the Concept of Individualisation
Nicos Poulantzas’s account of gender relations in his last book State, Power, Socialism provides insight into the relationship between class struggles and gender issues, mediated by the capitalist state. His account of the family in capitalism owes important influences to Foucault’s work but takes a different turn when it comes to explanations of the stability of domination and its underlying causes. Poulantzas’s concept of individualisation has …
Louis Althusser’s Critique of the Communist Party and the Question of the Postrevolutionary State
This essay explores some aspects of the debate led by Louis Althusser and Etienne Balibar on the strategy of the French Communist Party (PCF) in the 1970s. They saw the Euro-communist turn of the party as a strategy that accepted the influence of social democrats without addressing the crucial question of mass participation in the party. Their criticism of the PCF was also a criticism of the statist strategy in socialist countries at that time, w…

Romantic Love and Reproductive Hormones in Women
Increased reproductive success is among the most commonly proposed adaptive functions of romantic love. Here, we tested if hormonal changes associated with falling in love may co-vary with hormonal profiles that predict increased fecundity in women. We compared blood serum levels of estradiol (E2, E2/T), luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), prolactin (PRL), free testosterone (fT), and cortisol (CT), measured in the early …
