Certain structural features of income inequality in Colombia remain underexplored. Drawing on microdata from the 2022 DANE Large Integrated Household Survey (GEIH), this study examines the inequality across various income categories, provides decompositions of household per capita income inequality by income sources, and analyzes labor income inequality both within and between groups to assess their contributions to overall inequality. The findin…

Mobility between Colombian cities is predominantly repeat and return migration
Internal migration is one of the main driving forces of a country's demography. Yet, migration is path-dependent, and critical characteristics of internal migration, including the propensity to keep moving and return to previous locations, are frequently ignored. Here, a model of city-to-city migration is constructed, where the movement of individuals is modelled using the frequency of distinct sequences or signatures. A key novel feature of the …
The Consequences of the Pandemic for Subjective Well-Being: Data for Improving Policymaking
The pandemic has affected people's lives and emotions in profound ways, which governments ignore at their peril. Among the often disregarded consequences of the pandemic, especially in developing countries, are its toll on subjective well-being and its implications for health policymaking. This paper uses a battery of surveys with over 1800 observations collected in 2019 and 2020, which inform on many aspects of subjective well-being before and d…
Empleo femenino en las ciudades colombianas: Un Método De Descripción Estadística
The objective is to construct a methodology to measure the gender gap in “full and decent employment” and to break it down statistically according to factors that reflect the structure of the labor market and the productive structure of cities. The methodology is applied to 23 Colombian cities. Health perceptions in Latin America
The influence of cultural patterns and economic conditions on health perceptions in Latin America is studied using the results of the 2007 Gallup World Poll. The differences in health satisfaction between countries around the world have a robust association with variables that may reflect cultural differences rather than with aggregate economic variables or traditional health indicators. Simple health self-rating indicators reveal huge cultural d…
Outsiders?: The Changing Patterns of Exclusion in Latin America and the Caribbean. Economic and Social Progress in Latin America. 2008 Report
This report raises a number of fundamental questions about the multidimensional and interrelated nature of social exclusion and moves beyond the traditional emphasis on outcomes and groups to view exclusion as a process that results from societal traits that limit the functionings of the excluded. Using the tools of experimental economics, the report shows the enormous economic and welfare costs of exclusion, suggesting that inclusion policies sh…
Beyond Facts: Understanding Quality of Life
Traditionally, the concept of quality of life has been viewed through objective indicators. Beyond Facts looks at quality of life through a new lens, namely, the perceptions of millions of Latin Americans. Using an enhanced version of the recently created Gallup World Poll that incorporates Latin America-specific questions, the Inter-American Development Bank surveyed people from throughout the region and found that perceptions of quality of life…
Public Debt and Social Expenditure: Friends or Foes?
This paper assesses the effects of total public debt (external and domestic) on social expenditure worldwide and in Latin America using an unbalanced panel of around 50 countries for the period 1985-2003. The most robust and important finding is that higher debt ratios do reduce social expenditures, as popular opinion holds. Debt displaces social expenditures not so much because it raises the debt burden, but because it reduces the room (or the a…
The Politics of Policies: Economic and Social Progress in Latin America, 2006 Report
This report examines the quality of public policies in Latin America and the Caribbean after more than a decade of political and economic reform. A wide variety of examples and case studies are presented in an analytical framework to help explain why policies that work in certain institutional environments may not work in others. The focus of this report is not the content of policies, or their effects on major economic and social variables, but …
Is Geography Destiny? Lessons from Latin America
For decades, the prevailing sentiment was that, since geography is unchangeable, there is no reason why public policies should take it into account. In fact, charges that geographic interpretations of development were deterministic, or even racist, made the subject a virtual taboo in academic and policymaking circles alike. "Is Geography Destiny?" challenges that premise and joins a growing body of literature studying the links between geography …
Latin America's Lost Illusions: The Future of Structural Reform
The future of structural reforms in Latin America is under discussion. This paper synthesizes the facts and opinions that underlie this debate taking into account both the neo-liberal agenda and the views of the anti globalization movement. The paper pointing out that although the reform process has not ground to a halt, it has been incomplete and uneven, both across countries and different areas of reform. Next, the paper analyzes analyzes publi…
Facing Up to Inequality in Latin America
Latin America in the 1990s remains the most unequal region in the world in terms of income distribution. Yet because of its changing demographics -declining fertility rates and large number of young people entering the workforce- the region now has a unique window of opportunity to reduce the income gap by accelerating the development process, putting people to work, improving education, and saving for the future. This Report assembles the availa…
