  • “I Have a Package For Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Can You Point Me to Their House?”—Co-Designing Bystanders’ Interaction with Autonomous Delivery Vehicles

Open Access•Susanna Krämer, Eyal Ginosar et al.•ARTICLE•ACM Transactions on Human-Robot…•2025

Small-size autonomous vehicles have reached a level of technological maturity that enables their use as efficient means for goods delivery. Yet, current designs of both ground and aerial vehicles fail to address potential information needs of bystanders: What is this robot doing? Can it harm me? Does it need help? Through a series of six co-design workshops ( \(N = 22\) ), we iteratively explore two types of autonomous healthcare delivery vehicle…

  • Connecting the dots

Open Access•Mikołaj P Woźniak, Anna Walczak et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2025

Smart homes are evolving into complex ecosystems, but their inner workings often remain opaque to users, limiting their ability to troubleshoot and customise the technology. The distributed and hidden components make it challenging for users to understand how these systems work. To design interfaces that enable intuitive troubleshooting for non-experts, we first need a clear understanding of how they form mental models and instinctively diagnose …

  • Do Capital Grants Improve Microenterprise Productivity

Open Access•Laurin Janes, Michael Koelle et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2025•References: 2

Do capital grants improve microenterprise productivity? We use the lens of a production function to re-examine two previous randomised controlled trials that allocated capital to microenterprises. We find that productivity is higher for treated firms, and accounts for about 20-30 percent of the revenue effects of capital grants. Although long-run estimates are noisy, point estimates indicate that these productivity effects are sustained six years…

  • Gold mining and proto-urbanization

Marcel Fafchamps, Michael Koelle et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Economic Geography•2016•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Central place theory predicts that agglomeration can arise from external shocks. We investigate whether gold mining is a catalyst for early stages of urbanization in rural Ghana. We call this phenomenon proto-urbanization. Using cross-sectional data, we find that locations with gold mines exhibit most of the tell-tale signs of proto-urbanization. They have higher population densities, and they are also sites where more sophisticated forms of econ…
