  • Bast cords from the Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age in Poland, on the example of finds from Susz, Iława district

    Open Access•Magdalena Przymorska-Sztuczka•ARTICLE•Sprawozdania Archeologiczne•2025•References: 10

Artefacts made of organic materials from the 1st millennium BCE in Poland are relatively scarce, and products made of tree bast are even rarer than fabrics. There is limited evidence in the archaeological record for the production and use of bast cordage during this period. Tree bast cords have been preserved mainly in association with metal objects, like in the case of finds from Żelazo or Jodłowno. The remains of bast cordage were also identifi…

    Open Access•Magdalena Przymorska-Sztuczka, Jacek Gackowski et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science…•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 6

Bast cordage production and use during the Lusatian period in Poland. • The use of bast cordage as dress accessories in the North European Bronze Age. • Co-deposition of textiles and metal objects in the south Baltic region. Archaeological textiles and cordage from the 1st millennium BCE in Poland are relatively scarce. The majority of the available evidence has been preserved in a mineralised state or as imprints in association with metal and cl…

  • Influence of the Roman Empire on textile economy during the roman period in Poland

    Open Access•Magdalena Przymorska-Sztuczka•ARTICLE•Ophiussa Revista do Centro de…•2024

There is a substantial body of evidence for the wide-ranging interactions and connections between the Wielbark Culture and the Roman Empire. Roman imports are frequently identified in the burials of prominent members of the Wielbark Culture in Poland, with notable discoveries including three amber distaffs found in the necropolises of Czarnówko, Lubowidz, and Kowanówko. Furthermore, textile finds may also indicate such connections. The evidence s…

  • The Sacred Lake Project

Open Access•Jacek Gackowski, Łukasz Kowalski et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•Cited by: 3•References: 3

In 2023, prospection of a dried-out lake near Papowo Biskupie in north-central Poland identified substantial deposits of bronze artefacts. Excavation revealed further deposits and dozens of human skeletons that date from 1000-400 BC, suggesting that the site held particular significance as a place for sacrificial offerings in the Lusatian culture

  • Wytwórczość włókiennicza ludności kultury łużyckiej na obszarze Wielkopolski, Kujaw i ziemi chełmińskiej. Podstawy źródłowe i tezy ujęcia badawczego

W artykule zaprezentowano zagadnienia związane z wytwórczością włókienniczą społeczności zamieszkujących obszar Wielkopolski, Kujaw i ziemi chełmińskiej od późnej epoki brązu do początku epoki żelaza. Przedstawiono procesy, którym poddawane były włókna na różnych etapach produkcji tkanin oraz zwrócono uwagę na brak w materiale archeologicznym pewnych znalezisk związanych z włókiennictwem. Opisano ponadto dostępne do badań kategorie źródeł archeol…

  • Kaliska I

Open Access•Maciej Kaczmarek, Agnieszka Krzysiak et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 4

In the spring of 2017, amateur metal detectorists discovered a Late Bronze Age hoard near the village of Kaliska, Poland. • A Comb or a Loom? An Attempt at Interpretation of the Szemud Urn Image

    Magdalena Przymorska-Sztuczka•ARTICLE•Światowit•2019

Combs belong to characteristic motifs appearing on face urns from the Pomeranian culture. They are usually presented in the simplest way – in the form of several vertical lines coming from one horizontal line situated mostly in the central part of the urn. Archaeologists studying the Pomeranian culture accept an interpretation that all images comprised of vertical lines are combs (Dzięgielewski 2007: 183). The article presents another way of inte…

  • Polish, Silesian and Local Cloth Seals from Excavations in Gdańsk, Poland

    Open Access•Łukasz Połczyński, Magdalena Przymorska-Sztuczka•ARTICLE•Open Archaeology•2019•References: 1

This article presents a collection of early modern cloth seals revealed during an excavation in Gdańsk (Poland). Our aim is to present a collection of an often-neglected category of artefacts. These are cloth seals from towns and villages located along the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Habsburg Monarchy border. Tracking the import of cloth to Gdańsk (the most important commercial centre on the Baltic Sea at that time) based on the analysis o…
