  • Lavina Fielding Anderson

    Jessie L Embry•ARTICLE•Journal of Mormon History•2024

Lavina Fielding Anderson's belief in the importance of Mormon History blessed the Journal of Mormon History, its staff, and its authors. As the sole editor from 1991–2009, she expanded the journal from an annual to a quarterly. She encouraged scholars, solicited their papers, and forced them out of their comfort zones to publish ground-breaking articles. She worked with a board of editors, an executive committee, and copy editors who benefited fr…

  • Fiftieth Anniversary Forum

Jessie L Embry, Christopher James Blythe et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Mormon History•2024

As the Journal of Mormon History starts publishing its fiftieth volume, this forum looks back at its almost half-century run. During those years, the journal has published articles about the churches that trace their beginnings to Joseph Smith Jr. In this essay, I examine the history and content as the journal grew from a small yearly volume to four quarterly issues per volume of nearly three hundred pages each, and transitioned from a privately …

  • The Brigham Young Journals, Volume 1

    Jessie L Embry•ARTICLE•Journal of Mormon History•2024

From his baptism in 1832 until his death in 1877, Brigham Young observed, participated, and led The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His journals provide very little of that information since he kept spotty brief records of his activities. Primary sources are always helpful no matter how brief, and, as a result, several editors have published Young's writings.1 The Brigham Young Center Foundation volume, edited by members of the Josep…

  • Writing Mormon History

    Jessie L Embry•ARTICLE•Journal of Mormon History•2022

How do people approach studying the past? What motivates them to select a topic, wade through all the possible sources, force them to compile all the information, and then sit down and write an article or a book? The answer is easy for students at whatever level from high school classes to PhD programs. It is a class requirement. But what about people who just have a question and are not satisfied with an internet search? Joseph W. Geisner, an in…

  • Polygamy

    Jessie L Embry•ARTICLE•Journal of Mormon History•2022

Sarah M. S. Pearsall holds a PhD from Harvard and has taught early American history at the University of Cambridge and John Hopkins University. She spent ten years researching the history of polygamy in early America to better understand ideas about marriage. She explains: “In the midst of same-sex marriage debates . . . I wondered . . . why some people felt so threatened by other people's marriages? Why has marriage seemed so foundational to the…

  • Murder Among the Mormons

    Jessie L Embry•ARTICLE•Journal of Mormon History•2022

Mark Hofmann has haunted the Mormon History Association for years. I remember a session of his finds at a conference. A panel discussed the impact of Hofmann's forgeries and murders in 1986. And in 2021, Barbara Jones Brown created a panel to discuss the Netflix documentary Murder Among the Mormons. A panel member suggested Mark Hofmann was probably laughing in his prison cell realizing that he was still being discussed. An internet search shows t…

    Open Access•Jessie L Embry, Jessie Embry•ARTICLE•Rural History•2003

In 1950 Iran and the United States signed the first Point Four agreement, establishing a program now known as USAID. It fulfilled President Harry S. Truman's desire to control the Soviet bloc and to share technology with third world countries. Utah State University contracted with the U.S. Point Four program to provide technicians in agriculture from 1951 to 1954. This paper examines the successes and the frustrations that the Utahns felt in tran…

When I signed up to take an oral history class during the summer of 1973, I had no idea what the class even was. I only knew that I was starting a graduate program, and my major professor Thomas G. Alexander, also assistant director of the newly formed Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University, wanted students in the class being taught by a guest professor, Gary L. Shumway from California State University-Fullerton. That…
