  • Multimodality and Globalization

    Open Access•Ulrich Schmitz•CHAPTER•Encyclopedia of Applied Linguistics•2026

Human communication is typically multimodal. Verbal communication goes along with mimic and gesture; written text always shows a typeface more or less visually designed (Krämer, Cancik‐Kirschbaum, & Totzke, 2011).

  • Community Ma(r)king in the linguistic landscape of the Ruhr Metropolis

Open Access•Evelyn Ziegler, Ulrich Schmitz et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistic Landscape An…•2020

Central for this paper is the assumption that the Linguistic Landscape is a complex phenomenon that provides an insight not only into practices of symbolic place-making of communities but also into the relation between place, language, and belonging. According to Tietz (2002) , a community is based on shared norms and attitudes, a collectively binding horizon of values and understanding which also mark the boundaries of a community. Starting from…

  • Sichtbare Dialoge im öffentlichen Raum

Ulrich Schmitz, Evelyn Ziegler•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für germanistische…•2016

This paper aims to investigate the occurrences and characteristics of visual dialogues in urban spaces. In order to systematically examine the specific elements of visual dialogues the analysis draws on a corpus of more than 25.500 digital photographs taken in selected neighbourhoods in the cities of Essen, Bochum, Duisburg and Dortmund. The article discusses several approaches to the concept of “dialogue” and “dialogism” and distinguishes betwee…

  • Blickfang und Mitteilung. Zur Arbeitsteilung von Design und Grammatik in der Werbekommunikation

    Ulrich Schmitz•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für Angewandte…•2011

Design is conceived of as a symbolic form, according to Cassirer's definition. Via design, texts and pictures are merged into "viewable surfaces" (e.g., posters, computer screens) and thus jointly constitute new units of meaning. In this process, a semiotic division of labour between grammar and design is developing, which considerably relieves the task of grammar as a structural system for language. An empirical study on print examples of advert…

  • Lexikographie im Internet 2010 – Einleitung

    Ulrike Haß, Ulrich Schmitz•ARTICLE•Lexicographica - International…•2010

This introduction to the volume deals in general with media-related conditions and constraints of today’s online-lexicography. Chances as well as problems and the challenges in this field are described, be they technical, cultural or economic. The authors outline the current achievements and point to what has not yet been accomplished. The users’ perspective as well as the case of multilingual dictionaries are explicitly addressed. All in all, th…

  • Bildakte? How to do things with pictures

    Ulrich Schmitz•ARTICLE•Zeitschrift für germanistische…•2007

Obviously, there are characteristic differences between words and pictures. In a pragmatic perspective, however, verbal and pictorial communication do function in much the same (or, to say the least, related) way. This is why Austin's and Searle's speech act theories can be applied to pictures as well. Taking a car advertising campaign as an example, this essay discusses identification, merging, direct and indirect use of pictorial speech acts

  • Schriftliche Texte in multimedialen Kontexten

    Ulrich Schmitz•CHAPTER•Sprachwandel Durch Computer•1997
