  • Music and Social Movements

Open Access•Ron Eyerman, Andrew Jamison•BOOK•The Blackwell Encyclopedia of…•2007•Cited by: 20

In academic discussions, social movements and music have rarely been conceptualized together, while in actual practice the two have always been linked. Music has been important to social movements as an organizing tool: drawing individuals to participate in movement‐related activities, it has served as a source of courage and strength in trying situations, and has helped create the sense of collectivity, of moving together, that is so vital to an…

The new millennium has brought with it increasingly shrill attacks on those of us who are concerned about the environment. Particularly in relation to such complicated and conten-tious issues as climate change, environmental scientists and activists have been subjected to criticism and even ridicule by a wide range of people, who have apparently grown tired of the costs of environmental protection. The American writer Michael Crichton, in his nov…

The concerns of the public are divided into three ideal-typical categories: social (dealing with environmental and health risks), economic (dealing with both the threats and opportunities of the new technologies), and cultural (taking up ethical and moral concerns). It suggests that even historically there have been numerous scholars interested in the national components of scientific knowledge. I develop a model which allows me to compare the differences in scientific growth in Sweden and Denmark. My model consists of three interrelated levels: metaphysical bias, national scientific interests, institutional structures. The comparison…

    Andrew Jamison•ARTICLE•Technology and Culture•1989•Cited by: 1

For something that is widely considered to be of crucial, even strategic, importance, it is remarkable that there is so little agreement as to what is meant by technological innovation. And it is certainly not my intention in this article to give an answer that can satisfy everyone. My aim, rather, is to provide a kind of historical handle on the contemporary discussions of innovation and innovation policy, to attempt to place contemporary ideas …

For a number of years, both the Research Policy Programme (Lund) and the Theory of Science Institute (Goteborg) in Sweden have held courses on the research process. In Lund, these courses have primarily concentrated on the 'practice' of research: how it is organized, conducted, planned, financed, etc. In Goteborg, the emphasis has been on research 'theory' including definitions of science, philosophies of science, and the question of objectivity …

  • Seeds of the sixties

Andrew Jamison, Ron Eyerman•BOOK•Seeds of the Sixties•1994

The powerful images conveyed by those two words have become an enduring part of American cultural and political history. But where did Sixties radicalism come from? Who planted the intellectual seeds that brought it into being? These questions are answered with striking clarity in Andrew Jamison and Ron Eyerman's book. The result is a combination of history and biography that vividly portrays an entire culture in transition. The authors focus on …
