  • Integrating functional accessibility and pedestrian environmental comfort: A spatially explicit framework for urban walkability evaluation

Open Access•Qi Cao, Vincent Tourre et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2026

Urban walkability is central to sustainable urban development and, at the city scale, is increasingly viewed as shaped by both functional accessibility and pedestrian environmental comfort (PEC). However, most citywide assessments remain predominantly function-oriented, and few provide explicit behavioral validation using observed walking patterns. This study addresses this gap by proposing a spatially explicit, dual-dimensional framework that tr…

  • Designing thermally sensitive public spaces: An analysis through urban design media

Ignacio Requena-Ruiz, Daniel Siret et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Design•2023

Urban designers face the challenge of preserving urban life by creating public spaces that are resilient to rising temperatures. This paper studies the dissemination of urban designs specific to summer (‘urban coolspots’) throughout urban design media. First, the study of an inventory of urban coolspots (182 references) delineates their urban context, the main actors and principal cooling techniques. Second, a typological analysis of the projects…

  • Coupled use of isovists and wavelets for street intersection pattern determination

    Open Access•Thomas Leduc•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2023

The city is a complex “object” whose structure can be studied at several levels of scale. In this article, we propose to work on the scale of the street, the one in which the pedestrian is immersed, and more precisely on the scale of its articulations, the street intersections. These are indeed structuring places, variously walkable, potentially difficult to cross, which a methodical description can facilitate the use. To this end, we operate, in…

  • The automatic classification of urban open space by a pattern-matching method of the viewshed at intersections

    Open Access•Thomas Leduc, Kevin Hartwell•ARTICLE•Environment and Planning B Urban…•2020

This research focuses on the automatic classification of small urban fragments through a morphological analysis of cognitivist inspiration. The recognition algorithm is performed on observer-centric forms, constructed through the use of visibility assessment techniques over a series of individual points of view. These tools are (1) the isovist for its capacity to delineate and synthesize the visual properties of the immediate viewshed from a poin…

The volume of output appears to have diminished and the incidence of interest to have shifted. Postwar publication seems more notable for the appearance, in diverse fields, of some distinguished monographs than for more general studies of the …
