Is Germany Going Bananas? Life Cycle and Cohort Effects on Party Performance in Germany from 1953 to 2049
In the public debate concerning the consequences of demographic change in Germany it is often argued that the rising share of older voters will help the CDU/CSU to consolidate its power. This argumentation only applies if the age effect is assumed to be dominant. However, diverse socialisation backgrounds, captured by the cohort effect, also have to be taken into account. Based on the Repräsentative Wahlstatistik (Representative Electoral Statist…

Economic Voting in Times of Economic Crisis
The economic crisis hit Germany hard before the 2009 Bundestag election. Against this background the extent of economic voting in this particular election is analysed. As economic perceptions are often believed to be important determinants of voting behaviour the following questions are addressed in this article. Are perceptions of the voters' personal and the general economic situation influenced by the economic crisis and thus worse than in pre…

Economic Conditions, Unemployment and Perceived Government Accountability
When it comes to salient political issues, economic conditions and unemployment have been at the top of the list in Germany for quite some time. Especially when elections are imminent these topics gain tremendous importance, because perceptions of the economic situation as well as personal experience with economic hardship (like unemployment) are often believed to be important determinants of voting behaviour. Although the federal elections of 20…
Economic conditions and voting behaviour in German federal elections, 1994–2002
Although the Iraq crisis and the flood disaster largely determined the political agenda at the end of the 2002 federal election campaign, the economic situation was, once again, one of the most important themes in the context of the election itself. This article examines for the period of 1994 to 2002 whether, and in what measure, the electorate's perception of economic conditions played a role in voters' decisions. Empirical results show that ju…
Foreign Policy and the Rational Public in Comparative Perspective
The aggregate changes in public opinion attitudes toward foreign policy issues in three West European countries during the cold war decades (1954-1990) are analyzed. The stability hypothesis is addressed from different angles to ascertain the amount of change in public opinion attitudes toward foreign policy issues in France, Germany, and Italy. Results reveal a low level of volatility in public opinion that corresponds with the findings for the …

The dynamics of European party systems
In recent years it has become increasingly difficult to maintain that die European party systems are stable and that they reflect the societal cleavage structures of the past. One developmental aspect of the party systems is singled out for description and analysis in this paper. It is argued that European party systems in terms of electoral volatility, i.e., rates of net change in the electorates, are drifting away from each other. Some of the p…
The proximity and the directional theories of issue voting: Comparative results for the USA and Germany
In several recent studies George Rabinowitz and his co–authors challenge the ‘classical’ spatial model of issue voting, the proximity model, by introducing a directional model. In this article we examine whether different measurement of perceived issue positions of candidates or parties leads to diverging judgments about the predictive power of the directional model (which is claimed to be empirically superior), as compared to the proximity model…

Attitudes towards the abortion law in Germany, 1990–1992: Determinants and political implications
With data from a 1990–1992 panel survey determinants and political consequences of attitudes towards the abortion law in Germany are investigated. Compared to other issues, the topic is found not to be personally very salient to the average respondent. If it is perceived as highly important, however, such attitudes can be well accounted for, and have significant effects on voting intentions. General value orientations emerge as most important det…

Domestic and foreign policy issues in the 1988 presidential election
Data surveyed for the ‘Americans Talk Security’project prior to the 1988 U.S. election are used to evaluate the impact of domestic and foreign policy attitudes on the presidential vote. Both kinds of issues did have significant effects on voting behavior, contributing to Dukakis’defeat. It is demonstrated, however, that prior attempts to isolate and weigh the electoral influences of these two sets of opinions are flawed, because they ignore their…

Collective and individual economic judgments and voting in West Germany, 1961–1984
This article attempts to provide individual‐level support to findings of longitudinal macro‐level studies of the relation between economic variables and electoral outcomes in the Federal Republic. The theoretical framework is one of incumbency‐oriented vs. policy‐oriented political responses to collective vs. individual economic judgments (Kiewiet, 1983). Armaments, Detente, and Bureaucracy: The Case of the Arms Race in Europe
This study explores the extent to which defense spending of the European nations of NATO and of the Warsaw Pact since 1950 can be characterized as an action-reaction process. Since the level of armament expenditures in any state is an outcome of organizational processes, a model is introduced that represents the “normal” growth of defense spending as a function of bureaucratic momentum. Deviations from these expected levels are then treated as re…

In this article we attempt to replicate the hypothesis tested by Rummel and others that external and internal conflict are unrelated. We do this using data for 125 nations for the years 1966-1967. As did Rummel, we use exploratory factor analysis and regression analysis; in addition, we also employ confirmatory factor analysis. Results from confirmatory factor analysis contradict Rummel and reveal moderately strong correlations between internal a…

The Distribution of Seats in the European Parliament After Direct Elections: A Simulation Study

Some illustrative results of simulation runs are summarized which proceed from voter preferences as expressed in the most recent national …

Econometrics and Arms Races: A Critical Review and Some Extensions
Recent years have witnessed an increasing use of econometric analysis in arms race studies. The present article reviews this past and the potential future contribution of econometrics to arms race research and concludes that so far the main impact of the new approach has been on efforts at parameter estimation. Therefore, a number of problems typically arising in the application of econometric techniques to the estimation of arms race models from…

Parties, candidates and issues in the German federal election of 1980: An application of normal vote analysis
Normal Vote Analysis: A Methodological Note
By juxtaposing observed voting behaviour and voting expected due to partisan affiliations, normal vote analysis attempts to classify elections at the aggregate level and to estimate the impact of short‐term variables on the vote. Apart from graphical illustrations, this latter task is performed by the effect coefficients proposed by Boyd. This contribution demonstrates that these coefficients under certain circumstances can exaggerate the effect …
