  • Rural production and land use at Iron Age Clazomenae, Ionia

Open Access•Tom Maltas, Julia Tanzer et al.•ARTICLE•Vegetation History and…•2026•References: 17

We present new evidence for the nature of agricultural production and land use in the Iron Age Aegean through archaeobotanical remains recovered from the site of Clazomenae in Ionia, western Anatolia. The spectrum of crops and wild resources utilised at the site largely conforms to those recorded elsewhere in the Iron Age Aegean but includes rare finds of caper and sloe that support their status as likely foodstuffs in the region. High proportion…

  • Archaeology in southwest Anatolia: Research from Ionia and Caria in the last decade

    Open Access•Elif Koparal, Kenan Eren•ARTICLE•Archaeological Reports•2023

This paper presents a review of recent archaeological work in Ionia and Caria, located in southwest Anatolia. In this paper we focus on archaeological research conducted in the past decade and we present a synthesis of recent discoveries and published research. Southwest Anatolia is a region where the earliest archaeological work dates back to the 19th century. However, there are research areas that have been long neglected, and archaeological wo…

  • Agricultural terraces in the Mediterranean: Medieval intensification revealed by OSL profiling and dating

Open Access•Sam Turner, Timothy Kinnaird et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2021•Cited by: 30•References: 37

The history of agricultural terraces remains poorly understood due to problems in dating their construction and use. This has hampered broader research on their significance, limiting knowledge of past agricultural practices and the long-term investment choices of rural communities. The authors apply OSL profiling and dating to the sediments associated with agricultural terraces across the Mediterranean region to date their construction and use. …

  • A desolate landscape? Mobility and interaction in the chora of Klazomenai during the Early Iron Age

    Open Access•Elif Koparal, Rik Vaessen•ARTICLE•Anatolian Studies•2020•Cited by: 1

Over the past two decades or so, excavations at Klazomenai have unearthed a wealth of information about the Early Iron Age, showing it to have been a thriving settlement at this time. Accordingly, it is intriguing that systematic surveys in the chora of Klazomenai have turned up very few sites that can be dated to this period. In this contribution, we discuss the implications of this discrepancy between the excavation data and the survey data in …

  • Landscape archaeology, sustainability and the necessity of change

An exploratory visit to Jiayuguan was supported by the Wall-to-Wall initiative and the Chinese Academy of Cultural …
