  • From Polycrisis to Christology

    Open Access•Christine Helmer•ARTICLE•Streit-Kultur•2024

Das konstruktive theologische Argument lehnt sich an Howard Thurmans Formulierung »Religion of the Disinherited« (»R…

  • Genderealogy

    Open Access•Christine Helmer, Ruth Jackson Ravenscroft•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2023

This essay addresses the problem of the sexed and gendered subject of genealogy, and the binary central to the fixing of male agents in the self‐narration of disciplines in genealogy. Feminist and womanist theories are considered for their strategies of repair, such as the retrieval of women erased from genealogy, the repositioning of women as transgressive subjects from an hermeneutical perspective, and the task of changing the imaginary around …

  • Epistemology and Christology

    Christine Helmer•ARTICLE•Theologische Rundschau•2021

This paper addresses the new epistemological challenges that the Covid pandemic exposes, specifically the problematic »back to normal« mantra that forgets the intersectional injustices permeating contemporary society; and the difficulty in relating the incommensurable sides of the »metaphysical size gap« between personal experience of trauma and global statistics. A way forward is charted by theology's christological meaning-making on the cross, …

  • Law‐Gospel theologies of a state of exception

    Open Access•Amy Carr, Christine Helmer•ARTICLE•Dialog•2021

We address contemporary concerns with fascism by critically assessing the classic law/gospel relation in Lutheran theology. Karl Holl, founder of the Luther Renaissance in the early twentieth century, develops Luther's experience of the self under the divine wrath in terms that have affinity to what Carl Schmitt calls the “state of exception.” We examine similar non‐dialectical ways of relating law/gospel that nourish fascist tendencies on the ri…

  • The Medieval Luther

Open Access•Ill Beyond Oberman: Luther and the Middle Ages Evanston, Christine Helmer•EDITOR•BOOK•The Medieval Luther•2020

Staging a conversation among distinguished Luther scholars, historians of Christianity, and philosophers, The Medieval Luther makes the case that it is impossible to understand Luther's most important doctrines without exploring his philosophical inheritance. After all, Luther was an ardent participant in and contributor to the philosophical disputes of the late Middle Ages. By situating Luther's theology in relation to medieval healing practices…

  • Romanticism and the Re-Invention of Modern Religion

    Open Access•Christine Helmer•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Academy…•2019

Since the early decades of the twentieth century, theologians, intellectual historians, and scholars of the study of religion have investigated the phenomenon of religion from the perspective of modern developments in society, culture, economics, and politics. This is especially so for those scholars who see the arc of global history since the sixteenth century bending towards progress. The overriding assumption has been that modernity presented …

  • Lutherrenaissance Past and Present

Christine Helmer, Bo Holm•EDITOR•BOOK•Lutherrenaissance Past and Present•2015

This volume makes a distinctive contribution to the upcoming 500th anniversary of Luther’s reformation by looking back to the previous centennial in 1917 and tracing forward the enduring impact of the questions raised by Lutheran scholars then to contemporary research in religious studies, history, and theology. The great flourishing of interest in Luther’s religious experience and thought in Berlin at the turn of the twentieth century was known …

  • Introduction to Luther's Theology in Global Context

    Open Access•Christine Helmer•ARTICLE•Religion Compass•2009

Luther's theology has for the past two centuries been interpreted in the categories of German Protestant thought. As the paradigmatic 'Reformer', however, Luther transcends the geographical and historical restrictions of his own sixteenth-century German context, so that his person and work emerge as inspirations of freedom in global context. This essay looks at Luther's theology of freedom by treating its reception in distinct contexts. The parti…

  • A Review of Christlicher Glaube im Pluralismus. Studien zu einer Theologie der Kultur by Christoph Schwöbel

    Open Access•Christine Helmer•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2006

The key question that Christoph Schwöbel raises in Christlicher Glaube im Pluralismus is one that has emerged as an imperative. A Christian theology responsible to the contemporary realities of pluralism must enter its theological analysis of the global situation of Christian faith into wider discussions of culture. Theologians cannot abdicate their role in articulating their distinctive ways of schematizing reality. They cannot shy away from mak…

  • Schleiermachers Dialektik

Christine Helmer, Christiane Kranich et al.•EDITOR•BOOK•Schleiermachers Dialektik•2003

  • God from Eternity to Eternity

    Christine Helmer•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2003

A common uncritical criticism claims that dogma robs humans of the freedom to think and act. This dogmatic pronouncement reflects a sad misunderstanding con-cerning the function and meaning of dogma. When countering the negative effects of this attack, a systematic theology cannot be coerced into a defensive position. Rather, theology must clearly and creatively think of how a precise determination of dogma can remain principally open to a plural…

  • Luther’s Trinitarian Hermeneutic and the Old Testament

    Open Access•Christine Helmer•ARTICLE•Modern Theology•2002

In this study, the author shows that Luther’s trinitarian understanding is shaped by the royal Psalms’ dialogical model as well as informed by a hermeneutics that moors a trinitarian semantics in the Hebrew text of the Old Testament. The analysis concentrates on Luther’s translation into German of two Hebrew names for God and of passages classically associated with the trinitarian doctrine (Psalm 110:1; Psalm 2:2.12). The result is a trinitarian …
