Material Evidence
Slaves were central to every aspect of Roman society. However ̧ they are difficult to identify in the archaeological record. Most were genetically similar to the free population. Unlike slaves in the American ante-bellum South they did not have distinctive residential systems and foodways that can be differentiated archaeologically from those of free persons. Structures related to slavery like market buildings or slave barracks are not easily ide…
Early Islamic North Africa
This volume proposes a new approach to the Arab conquests and the spread of Islam in North Africa. In recent years, those studying the Islamic world have shown that the coming of Islam was not marked by devastation or decline, but rather by considerable cultural and economic continuity. In North Africa, with continuity came significant change. Corisande Fenwick argues that the establishment of Muslim rule also coincided with a phase of intense ur…
Archaeology, Ideology, and Urbanism in Rome from the Grand Tour to Berlusconi
Rome is one of the world's greatest archaeological sites, preserving many major monuments of the classical past. It is also a city with an important post-Roman history and home to both the papacy and the modern Italian state. Archaeologists have studied the ruins, and popes and politicians have used them for propaganda programs. Developers and preservationists have fought over what should and should not be preserved. This book tells the story of …
The Ancient Middle Classes
BOOK REVIEWS/COMPTES RENDUS 419 where he interprets the data in support of the high count scenario by positing a dramatic rise in the number of rural sites. Hin, applying what are generally fair filters on Launaro’s data (i.e., concerns with the data from small surveys; potential differential representation of small vs. large sites), whittles away at his assumptions for the growth in the number of sites from the republic to the principate, until …
Rome
Looks at the physical development of ancient Rome--its buildings, monuments, and urban spaces--while also exploring its social, economic, and cultural histories. Dyson follows Rome as it developed between the third century BC and the fourth century AD, dividing the megalopolis into distinct neighborhoods and locales. He shows how these communities, each with its own unique customs and colorful inhabitants, eventually grew into the imperial capita…

Survey and Settlement Reconstruction in West-Central Sardinia
The University of Maryland-Wesleyan Survey has attempted to reconstruct the development of the countryside of Sardinia during the Roman period through the use of survey archaeology. The general assumption has been that Romanization in Sardinia produced major changes in the previous nuragic rural settlement structure. The Maryland-Wesleyan Survey selected two areas (Fordongianus and Usellus) with a strong nuragic presence and major Roman centers. …

Archaeological Survey in the Mediterranean Basin
The aim of this article is to describe and discuss the use of archaeological survey in the Mediterranean area during recent decades. Emphasis will be placed on research conducted since World War II, and I will concentrate primarily on Greece and the Western Mediterranean. In this context, surveys centering on later prehistoric and historic periods will receive most attention. Note that even within these areas of concentration, this article cannot…

Settlement Patterns in the Ager Cosanus
Settlement Patterns in the Ager Cosanus
This paper describes a survey of rural sites located around the Roman colony of Cosa (founded 273 B.C.). One hundred and thirty-two sites were mapped and for the most part dated; the results allow a reconstruction of the settlement history of rural Cosa. The area apparently had sparse habitation before the Roman period, a steady population during the Republic, and a decline under the Empire which left a sparse population by the 4th century A.C. T…

Some Reflections on the Archaeology of Southern Etruria
The land of southern Etruria, long plagued by the twin scourges of malaria and absentee landlordism, has, since the Second World War, returned to agricultural prosperity. Parallel to this development and often growing out of it has been an increase in archaeological activity. Along with the traditional excavations at important Etruscan and Roman sites and the continual, nocturnal extractions of the tomboroN there have developed several projects t…
