Decurions ( decuriones or curiales ) were the members of local assemblies ( ordo decurionum or curia ) who ruled the cities of the Roman Empire with municipal status. Membership into the ordo was regularly decided by local magistrates, taking into account various, albeit vaguely defined, criteria, such as wealth, reputation, service, and ancestry.
