  • Jackal Bandwagoning’? The Achaean League Shifts Alliances from Macedon to Rome, Autumn 198 B.C

    Arthur M Eckstein•ARTICLE•The International History Review•2022•Cited by: 1

How states choose allies is one of the most important theoretical and practical questions in international politics. A central debate in the study of international politics is the frequency of ‘balancing’ against a rising state vs. ‘bandwagoning’ with such a rising state. This was an issue in antiquity as in the modern world. The Achaean League was a sophisticated Greek federal state. Its decision in autumn 198 B.C. to suddenly change its long-st…

  • Crash Course: From the Good War to the Forever War

    Arthur M Eckstein•ARTICLE•Journal of Cold War Studies•2019

There are two fundamental ways of discussing the roots of foreign policy. One is Primat der Innenpolitik (“the primacy of domestic politics”), the view that domestic policy and the needs of the domestic economic structure determine foreign policy. The other is Primat der Aussenpolitik (“the primacy of external relations”), the view that pressure from external competitors and predators is what determines foreign policy. The debate is not over whet…

  • The Comedy of Errors? A Reply to Mette Eilstrup-Sangiovanni

    Open Access•William C Wohlforth, Richard Little et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of International…•2009•Cited by: 4•References: 2

In her response to our article, Mette Eilstrup-Sangiovanni replaces balance-of-power theory (threat of hegemony begets balancing, which produces a tendency of international systems toward equilibria of power) with a complex congeries of competing and contingent conjectures about when states might balance. While these are certainly part of the extensive literature on the balance of power, lumping them together and calling them a `theory' invites a…

In AD 1519 the main geopolitical problem faced by the people of the city-state of Tlaxcala on the high plateau of Mexico was their oppression by their neighbors, the fearsome Aztecs. Then a new force appeared on the Mexican geopolitical scene, a force with which the Tlaxcaltecans eagerly allied in order to balance the power of Tenochtitlan. They helped this new force defeat the Aztec army, and many scholars believe that without the help of the Tl…

    Arthur M Eckstein•ARTICLE•Journal of Cold War Studies•2007

This essay reviews a new biography of Agnes Smedley, a radical American writer and journalist who secretly worked for the Soviet Union and the Chinese Communist Party on various endeavors, including espionage. When Smedley was accused in the late 1940s of having been a Soviet spy, she staunchly denied the allegations and depicted herself as an innocent victim of a McCarthyite smear. Ruth Price, the author of the new biography, initially expected …

  • Thucydides, the Outbreak of the Peloponnesian War, and the Foundation of International Systems Theory

    Arthur M Eckstein•ARTICLE•The International History Review•2003

Realism dominated the modern study of international systems. Contemporary realists, who claim Thuc dides, the ancient historian of the Peloponnesian War (fought 431-404 bc), as the founder of their school, most often cite 1.23.5-6, his summary of the causes of the war, in support of their claim. This article argues that important realist conclusions drawn from Thucydides rest on the habitual use of careless translations. They leave the impression…

  • Darkening Ethan: John Ford's "The Searchers" (1956) from Novel to Screenplay to Screen

    Arthur M Eckstein•ARTICLE•Cinema Journal•1998•Cited by: 8

Some film scholars charge that director John Ford was complicit in the savage racism of The Searchers' central character, Ethan Edwards. This essay demonstrates that Ford viewed Ethan as a negative, psychologically damaged, and tragic figure. By comparing the changes made from the source novel to the shooting script to the finalfilm, a constant darkening of Ethan's personality is revealed-most of it directly attributable to director John Ford
