Sustaining “Chineseness” via Chinese clan associations
Background and Purpose: Traditional Chinese clan associations are often considered at risk in the face of rapidly developing technology and a shift away from traditional norms. Using Chan She Shu Yuen Clan Association Kuala Lumpur & Selangor (CSSYKL) as a case study, this paper explores how a centennial Cantonese ancestral clan association in Malaysia seeks to involve youth, and how the reproduction of social capital through youth participation c…
Folklore, Authenticity and the Tourist Gaze in Touring Chinese Cultural Heritage
Of late, Chinese cultural heritage buildings have enjoyed attention as desirable destination images. This has been boosted by the tourist gaze, which derives its object of desire from the soft power of transnationally broadcast Chinese historical films and television series, such as “Longest Day in Chang’an”. Within the experience of tourism lies the issue of finding authenticity, which consists of three types: objective authenticity, constructiv…
The re-structure of iki
This essay traces the way that the Japanese aesthetic of iki is broadcast via a select Japanese manga and packaged as habitus. The uniqueness of the selected manga is that it is set in a Western society, specifically in Sherlockiana, but embraces Japanese values and aesthetics to make its point. Kuki Shuzo’s Structure of Iki was written in the context of the widespread re-evaluation of the Edo period which took place among Japanese intellectuals …

Consensus And Contestation in the Formation of Malaysian Studies
This article aims to question the proposition put forth by Abdul Rahman (2014) regarding the “rakyat” paradigm in Malaysia as an analytical tool for Malaysian society. The rakyat paradigm was introduced by Abdul Rahman Embong in response to Shamsul (1998)’s paper on “Ethnicity, class, culture or identity? Competing paradigms in Malaysian Studies”. While Shamsul (1996a) conceptualised these dimensions as parallel, if competing paradigms, Abdul Rah…
Alternative fairy-tale endings and the main character syndrome
The usual trope of happily ever after, signified by absolute gender conformity to traditional domestic stereotypes coupled with advancement and recognition in the realm of the public sphere, has been challenged by the new zeitgeist, which calls out the toxic positivity of such assumptions. The so-called “entitlement generation”, commonly referred to as Generation Y, Generation Me, or more critically as Generation 'Snowflake' or 'Woke' is often ch…
From Superdiversity to Social Difference
Due to Vertovec’s standing as a celebrated social theorist and his influence, we wish to discuss his condensation of sociology's most crucial concepts to make a convenient model of "the social organization of difference." Having performed a close reading of Vertovec's works, from the era in which he touted "super-diversity" up to his phrasing of "difference," we have concerns that his body of work leaves out the collective experiences of the "Glo…
Constructing ethnic consciousness
The Chinese community's unique position in Malaysian inter-ethnic relations weaves through intricate interactions with other ethnic groups, maintaining distinct cultural identities amidst Malaysia's diverse ethnic fabric. This study explores the intricate relationship between ethnic consciousness and cultural heritage among Malaysian Chinese people, examining, within a historical context, how this community maintains its distinct identity within …
Chan See Shu Yuen
Chinese clan associations can be found in many parts of the world, due to the Chinese emigration from mainland China in the 1800s. This paper contextualises the study of Chinese clan associations within the Asian approach to cultural heritage preservation. In particular, it takes the case of Cantonese clan associations, a dialect group of the Chinese, whose clan associations have been studied less extensively in comparison to other dialects such …
Expressive Rationality
Malaysian cosplayers, as a subset of Asian cosplayers, engage in a visually \nperformative activity which raises the issues of ethnic and gender performativity, \namong other identity markers. This is further contextualised within an “everydaydefned” experience of identity, in which its formation is influenced by non-“social \npower” agents such as popular narratives (Baharuddin 1996: 18; Baharuddin and \nAthi 2015: 268). In addition, cosplayers …
Expectation vs Reality
This article discusses the form of social capital present among Malaysian Chinese youth, comparing across those who are Chinese-medium educated and English-medium educated. The reason for comparison is because of the dichotomy of Confucian values in Chinese-medium education and Western liberal democratic values in English-medium education, which may influence their choice of social network. Using a self-designed survey questionnaire, I assessed w…
