Micrography and XRF Techniques to Investigate Protohistoric Gold Artifacts
Protohistoric gold findings from the archaeological site of Roca Vecchia (Melendugno, Lecce, Italy) are analyzed involving micrography and stratified XRF analysis. This exploitation allows to get a deeper insight into ancient gold manufacturing and wear processes adopted in the Southern Italian FBA. The compositional data suggest that the objects were made of raw gold. From a detailed analysis of X‐ray line ratios, we are able to identify artifac…
Net fishing in the central Mediterranean. An ethnoarchaeological research on the immaterial culture of the societies of the past
This paper explores how ethnoarchaeology can help to rescue the intangible cultural heritage of Mediterranean net-fishing from the threats of technological modernisation. Using the Salento peninsula (southern Italy) as a case study, we integrate ethnographic fieldwork with archaeological, historical and comparative data from Spain and the Greek Ionian Islands to reconstruct the operational chain of traditional net-fishing. Ancient tools such as n…
A New Start, 1000–630 BCE
Late Italian protohistory is characterized by innovative scenarios, in which the decline of the Aegean presence, which had characterized the previous phases in various areas of the peninsula, and the establishment in its place of trade with the eastern Mediterranean are significant elements. During the initial phases of the final Bronze Age, the Italian peninsula is characterized by substantial cultural homogeneity, with the appearance of the pro…

From Sicily to Salcombe
Bronze Age objects found in the English Channel off Salcombe, southern Britain, include an implement which has its normal home in Sicilian agriculture - perhaps as a plough shoe. The authors assemble and classify the objects and consider the web of exchange networks that brought the artefact from Sicily to Devon via France around the thirteenth century BC
