Assessing Life in the Face of Death: Moral Drama at the 1952 Trial of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee
The essay is a close analysis of the text of the 1952 secret trial of the members of the Jewish Anti-Fascist Committee (JAFC). The trial was an occasion of high drama in which many of the participants, facing death, responded with speeches and spontaneous outbursts that could not serve as any imaginable defense, but constituted a moral evaluation of their lives. This behavior was much unlike anything seen in the Soviet show trials of the 1930s. T…
The moral evolution of the Russian–Yiddish–English writer Abraham Cahan
One of the ways in which Cahan remained culturally Russian was his devotion to the kind of literary realism that embodies a clear system of values. This article examines the kind of values Cahan promoted, looking specifically at how this writer of educative but realist fiction dealt with the disconnect between socialist ideals and immigrant life. It follows the evolution of Cahan’s literary formula from the transparency of the early stories to th…

I'll run the parapet and won't fall.Don't contradict me.Have pity.Your cowardly eyes are unpleasant to the gods* Your mouths open not to the point.Your noses know nothing of trembling smells.Eat soup -that's your occupation.Sweep your rooms -it's your eternal fate. But take from me your blindfolds and your wrappings. My food is salt, and yours is sugar.I have ray own gardens and my own fields. My own goats are at pasture there. In my trunk is a fur h…

The Ordinary, the Sacred, and the Grotesque in Daniil Kharms's The Old Woman
The work of Daniil Kharms was lost to the West for many years. A poet and black humorist, creator of Russia's short-lived literature of the absurd, Kharms shared the fate of many of his contemporaries. His work, which was passed from hand to hand after his disappearance in 1941, began to surface in print only in the late 1960s. But in spite of a number of recent publications, Kharms remains largely unknown and misunderstood. His eccentric, often …
