Family Law Effects on Divorce, Fertility, and Child Investment
To assess the child welfare impact of policies governing divorced parenting, such as child support orders, child custody assignments, and marital dissolution standards, one must consider their influence not only on the divorce rate but also on spouses’ fertility choices and child investments. We develop a model of fertility, parenting, and divorce, from which we derive estimates of parental preferences and a child cognitive ability production fun…

Transfers to Households with Children and Child Development
We utilise a model of household investments in the development of children to explore the impact of various transfer policies on the distribution of child outcomes. We develop a cost criterion that can be used to compare the efficacy of unrestricted, restricted, and conditional cash transfer (CCT) systems, and find that an optimally chosen CCT programme is the most cost‐efficient way to attain any given gain in average child quality. We explore s…
Household Choices and Child Development
The growth in labour market participation among women with young children has raised concerns about its implications for child cognitive development. We estimate a model of the cognitive development process of children nested within an otherwise standard model of household behaviour. The household makes labour supply decisions and provides time and money inputs into the child quality production process during the development period. Our empirical…
Equilibrium Wage and Dismissal Processes
I develop and estimate an equilibrium model of the labor market in which inefficient employees are systematically eliminated from the sector of the market characterized by asymmetric information and moral hazard. Systematic selection on the distribution of productivity characteristics produces wage sequences that are increasing in tenure for employees never previously terminated even in the absence of long-term contracting between employees and i…

Labour Markets in an Ageing Europe
The population of the European Community will fall by 2% by the year 2025. Between 1960 and 1990, it grew by 17%. This contrast reflects the dramatic growth of the population of pensioners in the total population, and also the rapid ageing of the Community's working population. In this volume, based on a CEPR conference held in Munich in April 1992, leading economists in the field assess demographic and labour market developments in Western and E…
Wages and Job Mobility of Young Workers
This paper presents a discrete-time version of Jovanovic's model of worker-firm matching. Descriptive evidence is presented that supports the notion that unobserved worker-firm heterogeneity is an important component in the intertemporal structure of wages for young workers. A structural econometric model of wage dynamics under worker-firm sorting is developed and estimated. Finally, a formal test of the matching model is carried out, and the mat…
Years of Poverty, Years of Plenty
New Methods for Analyzing Individual Event Histories
We are grateful to Takeshi Amemiya, Marjorie McElroy, George Neumann, Guilherme Sedlacek, George Yates, and especially Gary Chamberlain and Burt Singer for comments on this chapter. George Yates provided extremely competent programming assistance. Portions of the chapter were presented at the Summer Meetings of the Econometric Society, Montreal, in June 1979 and the Denver Meetings of the Econometric Society in September 1980. This research was s…
