  • The geography of child disability in Italy

    Open Access•Paola Biasi, G Conti et al.•ARTICLE•European Societies•2026

The prevalence and nature of child disability vary considerably across and within countries, reflecting differences in healthcare systems, socioeconomic conditions, and cultural factors. We present new evidence from unique administrative data on child disability in Italy, examining prevalence by geography and age. We analyse how socio-economic and health indicators—at both individual and local level—are associated with the likelihood of disabilit…

Open Access•Maria De Paola, Francesca Gioia et al.•ARTICLE•Economics of Education Review•2023

Despite growing consensus in the public debate that self-discipline is key to succeeding in an online learning environment, the evidence available is very limited. We investigate the role of procrastination as a moderator of the impact of online teaching on student performance. We take advantage of the forced transition from traditional class-based to online teaching induced by the COVID-19 pandemic and adopt a difference-in-differences strategy …

  • Civicness Drain

    Open Access•Moti Michaeli, Marco Casari et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 9

Migration may cause, not only a brain drain, but also a ‘civicness’ drain, leading to a poverty trap. Using migration choices of southern Italian high-school students classified as civic if not cheating in a modified die-roll experiment, we uncover a key role of local civicness (average civicness in the class): a civicness drain is observed only at high and low local civicness. We rationalise this pattern with a model in which civic and uncivic t…

Relying on a natural experiment consisting in 130 competitions for promotion to associate and full professor in Italian universities, we analyse whether gender discrimination is affected by the gender of evaluators. We examine the probability of success of each candidate in relation to the committee gender composition, exploiting the random assignment of evaluators and controlling for candidates’ scientific productivity and a number of individual…

  • Organizational Design, Project Selection, and Incentives

Maria De Paola, Vincenzo Scoppa•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2006

This paper compares benefits and costs related to hierarchical and decentralized organizations in an agency framework. We show that the relative efficiency of hierarchy diminishes in contexts with asymmetric information. When effort is not observable, performance-related pay is required in order to encourage the agent to work hard. With risk-averse agents the use of this incentive system is more costly under hierarchy rather than under decentrali…
