Arts-led co-creation in contested coastal futures
Coastal social-ecological systems face intensifying pressures from climate change, extractive industries, and competing claims to space and resources. These conflicts carry profound justice dimensions about who benefits from coastal resources and whose knowledge counts in decision-making. Beyond technical management challenges, we can view these as contested futures where different groups envision fundamentally different possibilities for places …
Variations in stakeholders’ ecosystem service priorities for managing a marine protected area
Establishing radiogenic strontium isotope signatures for Chavín de Huántar, Peru
Predictors of local support for a seawater desalination plant in a small coastal community
An organic geochemical record of the last interglacial–glacial transition from the high elevation Colorado Rocky Mountains
N -Alkane evidence for the onset of wetter conditions in the Sierra Nevada, California (USA) at the mid-late Holocene transition, ~ 3.0 ka
n -Alkane biomarker distributions in sediments from Swamp Lake (SL), in the central Sierra Nevada of California (USA), provide evidence for an increase in mean lake level ~ 3000 yr ago, in conjunction with widespread climatic change inferred from marine and continental records in the eastern North Pacific region. Length distributions of n -alkane chains in modern plants growing at SL were determined and compared to sedimentary distributions in a …
Climatic and human controls on the late Holocene fire history of northern Israel
Long-term fire histories provide insight into the effects of climate, ecology and humans on fire activity; they can be generated using accumulation rates of charcoal and soot black carbon in lacustrine sediments. This study uses both charcoal and black carbon, and other paleoclimate indicators from Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee), Israel, to reconstruct late Holocene variations in biomass burning and aridity. We compare the fire history data with …
The Mesolithic–Neolithic transition in southern Iberia
New data and a review of historiographic information from Neolithic sites of the Malaga and Algarve coasts (southern Iberian Peninsula) and from the Maghreb (North Africa) reveal the existence of a Neolithic settlement at least from 7.5 cal ka BP. The agricultural and pastoralist food producing economy of that population rapidly replaced the coastal economies of the Mesolithic populations. The timing of this population and economic turnover coinc…
Applications of Sr Isotopes in Archaeology
Fisherfolk and farmers
This study investigates human dietary patterns and economic trends at the coastal site of Ancón, Peru during the Andean Middle Horizon (550AD-1000AD) using stable isotopic data from 32 individuals buried at the site. δ13C and δ15N results from human bone collagen and δ13C from human tooth enamel and bone carbonate indicate that inhabitants consumed a mixed diet composed primarily of marine protein and C4 resources, with only marginal reliance on …
Isotopes reveal limited effects of middle Pleistocene climate change on the ecology of mid-sized mammals
Reconstructing Middle Horizon mobility patterns on the coast of Peru through strontium isotope analysis
