Digital platforms and democratic publics: How social media platforms selectively appropriate and strategically subvert institutional logics
Microphones, not megaphones: Functional crowdworker voice regimes on digital work platforms
Digital work platforms are often said to view crowdworkers as replaceable cogs in the machine, favouring exit rather than voice as a means of resolving concerns. Based on a qualitative study of six German medium-sized platforms offering a range of standardized and creative tasks, we show that platforms provide voice mechanisms, albeit in varying degrees and levels. We find that all platforms in our sample enabled crowdworkers to communicate task-…
Between mutuality, autonomy and domination: Rethinking Digital Platforms as Contested Relational Structures
This Special Issue advances a new understanding of digital platforms as dynamic and relational. An archetypal transaction platform, we argue, is comprised of three canonical social relationships which exist in tension with each other. The first is mutuality-the practices of sharing and reciprocity which animated the early days of the 'sharing economy'. The second is autonomy-representing the desire for freedom and independence attracting many ear…
Spillover Effects across Transnational Industrial Relations Agreements: The Potential and Limits of Collective Action in Global Supply Chains
Using qualitative data from interviews with multiple respondents in 45 garment brands and retailers, as well as respondents from unions and other stakeholders, the authors analyze the emergence of the Action Collaboration Transformation (ACT) living wages initiative. They ask how the inter-firm coordination and firm-union cooperation demanded by a multi-firm transnational industrial relations agreement (TIRA) developed. Synthesizing insights from…
Governance of Labor Standards in Australian and German Garment Supply Chains: The Impact of Rana Plaza
This article analyzes the impact of the 2013 Rana Plaza building collapse on garment lead firms' labor standards policies in the light of new governance approaches, particularly the pathbreaking Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh. Based on a sample of 20 Australian and German garment firms, the authors find that firms with low prior baseline standards revised their supply chain and sourcing policies and signed the Accord. Firms with…
Unpacking the middleground of creative cities: Spatiotemporal dynamics in the configuration of the Berlin design field
This paper sheds a light on the middleground of creative cities, highlighted as a crucial intermediary between creative scenes on the underground and formal institutions on the upperground. Tracing the spatiotemporal dynamics in the emergence of the Berlin-based design field over time, the study suggests that a productive middleground is itself historically and spatially conditioned. Elaborating extant knowledge on creative field emergence, we sh…
How can employment relations in global value networks be managed towards social responsibility
Ensuring social responsibility is a continued challenge in value creation processes that are globally dispersed among multiple organizations. We use the literature on interorganizational network management to shed new light on the question of how employment relations can be managed more responsibly in global value networks (GVNs). In contrast to the structure-oriented global value chain perspective, a network management perspective highlights the…
From being there to being aware: Confronting geographical and sociological imaginations of copresence
In economic geography, the notion of copresence has been at the very center of the research agenda for decades. The elaboration of the benefits of colocation and physical proximity was (and still is) a chief aim of the disciplinary project to demonstrate that "geography matters". The geographical concern with colocation, proximity and distance, in fact, resonates with the sociological discourse on copresence. And yet, the relationship between cop…
Translating European Labor Relations Practices to the United States Through Global Framework Agreements? German and Swedish Multinationals Compared
Extensive research has shown that European multinational enterprises (MNEs) have a propensity to avoid collective employee representation when going abroad. This study investigates whether Global Framework Agreements (GFAs) can reverse this pattern by comparing how four European MNEs—two from Germany and two from Sweden—implement GFAs in the United States, a country with weak collective representation rights. The authors find that an MNE’s home c…
