  • Margarita’s La Habana

    Open Access•Guadalupe García•ARTICLE•Urban History•2025•References: 7

This article re-examines the geography of late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Havana through the gendered lens of Black freedom and enslavement. The author uses fragmentary evidence surrounding the disappearance of Margarita, a young, enslaved girl in 1820s Havana, to suggest how the city’s African and African-descended residents navigated urban space in opposition to colonial design and function. In the process, the author suggests the…

The city walls, built in the early seventeenth century, defended Havana from pirates and corsairs and from the…

  • The City Speaks

    Lisa B Y Calvente, Guadalupe García•ARTICLE•Cultural Studies•2014

It also illustrates how these resulting imageries are used, as bell hooks describes, to ‘talk back’ to the current issues of globalization an…

  • Nuestra patria La Habana

    Open Access•Guadalupe García•ARTICLE•Nuevo mundo mundos nuevos•2011

This essay explores the 1762 British occupation of Havana. It argues that the military crisis served as a catalyst for the emergence of a discursive space where racial hierarchies were momentarily suspended as residents attempted to make sense of the unfolding events. 1762 thus functions as a window into the military transformations that the city experienced and their effect on race relations in colonial Havana. The descriptions of events and her…
