  • The balcony peer effect in urban political expression

Open Access•Carlos Martínez De Ibarreta Zorita, David Felipe Martín-García et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences & Humanities Open•2025

Balconies have not been fully conceptualized and analyzed as a specific political scene with their singular scope and significance and governed by their own rationale. A recent effort to reverse this abandonment has insisted on their positive contribution to free political expression and to an urban version of deliberative democracy. This article identifies the “balcony peer effect”: an endogenous mechanism whereby eye-level visibility across nei…

  • Early dropout predictors in social sciences and management degree students

    José M Ortiz-Lozano, Pilar Aparicio-Chueca et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Higher Education•2024

Student dropout is a major concern in studies investigating retention strategies in higher education. The results indicate that two variables, the percentage of subjects failed and not attended in the first semester, demonstrate signific…

During the last two decades, universities around the world have increased the adoption of English-medium instruction (EMI) as a way to enhance internationalisation and global competitiveness. EMI adoption presents a wide range of opportunities, but it also presents some challenges, being one of them the potential impact on students’ academic performance. This paper analyses the impact of EMI on the academic performance of the students in a Spanis…

  • Dunning–Kruger effect and flat-earthers

Open Access•Jose Luis Arroyo-Barrigüete, Carlos Bellón et al.•ARTICLE•Public Understanding of Science•2023

This article aims to analyze the factors influencing belief in a flat Earth. We focus on Spain, a country that sadly has some of the most relevant figures on this topic in the Spanish-speaking world. After a qualitative analysis of YouTube videos on the main channels on the subject, a survey was carried out on 1252 individuals. The results point to two conclusions. First is the presence of a considerable Dunning–Kruger effect among flat-earthers.…

    Open Access•Jose Luis Arroyo-Barrigüete, Jose Luis Arroyo-Barrigüete Jose Luis…•ARTICLE•Evolutionary Studies in…•2023

This article analyzes Toole’s novel from a causal perspective, focusing on the cause-effect dynamics that make the plot advance, from the initial event at D.H. Holmes until the outcome in the Night of Joy. A combination of qualitative and quantitative methodologies has been applied to identify a series of 47 causal events that summarize all actions with an impact on plot development. Our research shows that the causal study of the novel is a usef…

  • Class participation and feedback as enablers of student academic performance

Open Access•Jordan Marquez, Laura Lazcano Benito et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2023

In an educational context focused on student learning, class participation and feedback are key to improving students’ performance. Class participation grading methods are often unclear and subjective, therefore, providing feedback on class participation grades is challenging for lecturers. In this study, the Work-In-Class Assessment Tool (WICAT) designed by researchers is a multidimensional system that grades class participation by assessing stu…

  • The “Cthulhu network”

    Open Access•Jose Luis Arroyo-Barrigüete•ARTICLE•The Journal of Popular Culture•2023•References: 3

In the context of popular culture, the work of Lovecraft deserves a prominent role, not only for its influence on many later authors, but for its profound impact on 20th century popular culture, from music and video games to films, comics, and merchandising. This paper analyzes the way in which Lovecraft developed his Cthulhu Mythos, creating a dense network of relationships between his different tales. After analyzing a corpus of 102 works by th…

  • Gender Differences in Mathematics Achievement

    Open Access•Jose Luis Arroyo-Barrigüete, Susana Carabias-López et al.•ARTICLE•SAGE Open•2023•References: 45

Previous research on the gender gap in mathematics indicates that, in the case of Spain, the gap is stable and has even increased during the last years both in primary and secondary education. The objective of this paper is to analyze whether this gender gap remains by changing the academic level and the way of measuring performance. A sample of 2,713 undergraduate management students (1,478 female and 1,235 male) has been analyzed. The results s…

  • One year of European premiers leadership and empathy in times of global pandemic

Open Access•Jose Luis Arroyo-Barrigüete, Lucía Barcos et al.•ARTICLE•Cogent Social Sciences•2022

After over a year of the COVID-19 pandemic, we observe very different health and economic outcomes across countries. Has this also been the case for the communication of their leaders? Has the communication of the political leaders of most affected countries shown higher levels of sentiment? This study uses Twitter to test whether a sample of European leaders exhibited empathy in their unmediated communications, as advocated by neo-charismatic le…

    Open Access•Jose Luis Arroyo-Barrigüete•ARTICLE•Co-herencia•2019•References: 3
