Role of Posterior Occlusal Support in the Development of Frailty Among Japanese Adults
Floods and flats
A significant portion of the global population resides in coastal areas and faces increasing flood risks. This study applies a hedonic pricing model to examine how flood risk affects residential property prices in Japan, using both plan-scale and maximum-scale flood maps. Our analysis indicates that apartments located within plan-scale flood zones are priced 8.5% lower than comparable units outside these zones, while under the maximum-scale flood…
No Cost Sharing for Public Assistance Recipients and Health Service Usage in Japan
This study found that eliminating cost sharing under a PA system was associated with increased outpatient health service use, particularly for dental care. These findings highlight financial barriers to care among low-income populations and suggest that no cost-sharing policies can improve access but may require policy measures to address overuse

Association between consumption of small fish and all-cause mortality among Japanese
Objective: Although small fish are an important source of micronutrients, the relationship between their intake and mortality remains unclear. This study aimed to clarify the association between intake of small fish and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. Design: We used the data from a cohort study in Japan. The frequency of the intake of small fish was assessed using a validated FFQ. The hazard ratio (HR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) f…
The association between objective and subjective oral health conditions and the presence of anorexia of aging among Japanese older Adults1
Anorexia of aging is a risk factor for malnutrition among older adults. This study aimed to evaluate the association between objective and subjective oral health and anorexia among independent older adults. This cross-sectional study targeted independent older adults aged ≥65 years who participated in the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study conducted in 2022. The outcome variable was the presence of anorexia, as assessed by the Simplified Nutri…
Social disconnection and suicide mortality among Japanese older adults
Avoidance of not only depressive symptoms, but also social disconnection including eating alone, is useful in suicide prevention among older adults
Risk aversion and cleaner cooking fuel choice
Cleaner cooking is an important policy objective in the bid to achieve sustainable development. Despite efforts to encourage cleaner cooking fuel use, biomass fuel is still widely used in many developing countries. This study investigates the role of behavioral factors, particularly risk aversion, in the choice of cooking fuels in Ghana. In addition, we investigate how the improvement of supply infrastructure and services mitigates the impact of …

Do municipal mergers reduce the cost of waste management? Evidence from Japan
This study investigates whether municipal mergers result in lower waste management costs. We develop a novel virtual merging method based on machine learning techniques to compile the data of the control group and estimate the effect of the large-scale consolidation in Japan on the various costs of managing municipal solid waste. We find that these mergers actually led to an increase in the total cost per ton. Estimation results also reveal that …

Exposure to household dysfunction at childhood and later number of teeth among older Japanese adults
An exposure to a household dysfunction at childhood was associated with having fewer teeth in later life among men but not among women
The effects of regional goal setting on household waste
This study investigates the effects of food waste (FW) reduction goal setting on waste generation. Using a unique dataset on the status of policy response with goals for household food waste reduction across Japanese municipalities, we estimate the causal effect of setting FW reduction goals in the public plan on household waste output. The results indicate that goal setting reduces waste output by 3.38 kg per capita per year, resulting in a redu…

Denture Wearing Moderates the Association between Aspiration Risk and Incident Pneumonia in Older Nursing Home Residents
Aspiration is increasingly recognized as a major risk for pneumonia, but a potential link between wearing dentures and incident pneumonia with aspiration risk is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate whether denture wearing moderates the association between aspiration risk and incident pneumonia in older adults. We used prospective cohort data of 156 residents aged >70 years from eight nursing homes in Aso, Japan. Aspiration risk was …

Commodity Shortages and Changes in World Trade
The healthy expansion of trade relations experi enced throughout the postwar era has recently been inter rupted. During the 1973-74 economic boom, there were widespread shortages of commodities. As the world economy has plunged into a deep recession, most of the commodity shortages have disappeared. Looking ahead for the next 10 years or so, when the world economy returns to a path of normal growth, are we likely to see widespread chronic commodi…
Developing Countries and Non-Fuel Minerals
Trends in the world market place for nine major minerals, iron ore, bauxite, copper, manganese ore, lead, nickel, phosphate rock, zinc, and tin are discussed. Demand for bauxite, nickel, and phosphate rock is anticipated to increase faster than economic activity generally. Demand for iron ore, manganese ore, copper, and zinc will expand at rates of 4 to 4.5 percent per year. Lead and tin are estimated to increase at rates of 3.0 and 1.2 percent r…
